TEAM PLAYERS 2011 ( left to right )
14. Zannon Daff…A tough no frills defender who likes playing low to the ground. Difficult to shift out of position and impossible to get away from when tackled. Has played at full forward in grand finals before so he is no slouch in front of goals either.
37 Craig Nankervis.. The longest serving player in the club has this year moved from his usual half back position due to the Barry’s arrival and now uses his speed, experience and prodigious kicking ability to effect in the ruck roving position
17. Tony Lester….The engine room of the team, picks up a plethora of kicks. A fearless and zip fast centreman/forward who loves getting the hard ball has had a great season after playing last season in the QFL.
51 Adam Smrdel…. First played Seniors last year while in the Under 18`s has now become a backline fixture in the side .Has great ball skills and the ability to pick the right options in defence.. Won this years MPNFL Young Gun Award.
No 3 Lewis Roberts. Playing his third Grand Final in a row. A mobile forward who is extremely elusive at ground level, he can also take a mark, is a long, accurate kick and with his strength is almost impossible to beat in one on one contests
No 7 Ashley Eames..The most decorated player in the club at 200cm and 114kg, Ash joined the Club from North Albury last year after stints with Frankston Dolphins and Springvale Scorpions representing the VFL on 2 occasions. Is a ruckman of the old school working on body position and pin point palming to beat opponents. Has had a stellar season representing both the MPNFL and VCFL in representative matches and named in the Ruck in the MPNFL Team of the Year.
32 Michael Chaplin… Has topped the Clubs goal kicking in all senior grade since the 2007 under 18`s. Has had his best year ever kicking 64 goals and being named in the 2011 MPNFL Team of the Year. A tall lanky full forward who uses his great acceleration to get an initial break on his opponent and take his marks out in front.
15 Brad Ulms…Another of the clubs 200cm giants, plays up forward and in the ruck when needed. Another ex Dolphin, has a great leap and a safe pair of hands and is surprisingly agile at ground level for such a big man. Is particularly adept at gaining possession from goalmouth packs and snapping goals from any position. Definitely the Clubs go to man
12. Rhys Johnson. Joined last year from Old Haileybury and has since made the wing position his own. Had a great final series last year and has continued this form in to season and has been instrumental with his drive off the centre in the clubs success this year.
Can be close checking in defence or can boom the ball forward in to attack as the situation demands.
No 5 Jie Coghlan.. Another ex Dolphin is the consummate utility player, thrown in were needed in attack or defence. Small but tenacious with an overload of courage he likes nothing better than to run the ball in to attack or lay in crashing tackles in defence.
No 2 Byron Barry. A close checking defender, joined YCW last year from Frankston Dolphins where he had a permanent spot on the HBF, playing over 70 games. Added a wealth of experience and skill to a backline already considered the best in the League and won YCW`s Best & Fairest Award in his first year!!
67 Lachie Wallace… Another Stingray, drafted from YCW, has also played seniors whenever available including the 2009 final series. Extremely mobile and zip fast has exceptional ball handling skills and ball sense. A true utility he plays mainly on the forward flank or on ball where his agility gains him many opportunities.
60 Josh Westerman….Drafted to the Stingrays at the start of this season and has since played in our seniors whenever available. Plays in the pocket or back flank were his speed and leap have made him an effective counter to opposition forwards
21. Kevin Lylak…. In the Under 18 finals last year and played in his first senior game in round 4 this year and hasn’t looked back. Built like the proverbial has made the back pocket his own. Surprisingly fast for his build, his tenacity and aggression make him a force opposition forwards find impossible to cope with. Was voted our best player in our last encounter with Karingal.
8 Ben Tellis….Has great speed, stamina and agility, a formidable combination for such a busy in and under player whether he is roving, on the wing or centre. This year, he has continued playing mainly up forward where his elusiveness has netted him 45 goals .This year played his 200th senior game since joining from Sandringham in 2001
10. Paul Wintle.. Played the start of 2010 in the reserves before finding his niche spot in the seniors at full back, developing this year in to one of the best in the League. Short for a key position player he makes up for this with his pace, leap and tenacity, not giving his opponents any latitude. Has played tight on all the key forwards this year and has more than held his own.
6. Dale Carroll…..Picked up from Ashwood for the second time; this key position player has added extra depth to the side, being able to play back or forward and in the ruck if needed. Good on the ground is also an excellent mark and kick.
23 David Bodley After showing good form in the early reserve games last year was promoted and hasn’t looked back since, taking all before him. A tall solid ruckman with a great leap and a vice like grab has great football peripheral vision, reads the play accurately and is always ready to play on at all costs or pass off to advantage
18. Adrian McIntyre A clever skilled onballer/forward who can kick oppurtunistic goals from all over the forward line. Generates exceptional pressure on his opponents, is fearless and loves to go in for the hard ball where his bone shattering tackling make him a player to be avoided.
27.Kyle Hutchinson….A bullocking forward adept at crashing the packs to break the ball out and snap goals from the most difficult positions. Not overly fast he takes some stopping when on the run and can take marks from anywhere. Noted for his defence in the forward line, he has a bone crunching tackle.
34 Steve Roberts.. The fittest man in the club, can run all day and has tremendous endurance and recovery powers. Benefited hugely from the arrival of Ash Eames with whom he has forged a formidable ruck partnership. Courageous, fast, with pin point accuracy with ball or handpass he is the perfect onballer who was rewarded for his efforts with the 2010 MPNFL Peninsula MVP and a place in the MPNFL 2011 `Team of the Year`..
11 Anthony”Bundy”Barry.. Has had a stellar career since returning from the Dolphins. Playing as an onballer/forward he won the clubs B&F in 2007/8 and was made captain 2010. Extremely fit with endless endurance, great speed and tactical skills he has had another great season, playing on the HBF in tandem with Cousin Byron

Zannon gets his kick away despite some hot opposition.
The last football Saturday in September saw bugs and his Boys heading off to Frankston Park, to take on our most hated adversary of the eighties, in long time foe the Karingal Football Club. Having beaten them easily in the Home and Aways by 53 and 46 points respectively, our Semi Final loss to them had been totally out of character.
Needless to say, this loss only made the team more determined to give their all to take home the 2011 Flag, and they reaffirmed their commitment to each other. Our 95 point demolition of Seaford in the Preliminary Final, must have sent shivers up Karingal’s spine, showing them we would be a hard nut to crack in the GF, and it would take something extraordinary from the Bulls to match it with us on the day.
From the side that toppled Seaford, hard decisions were made and the unfortunate Grover was dropped for Lachie Wallace to give more in options in attack.
At the toss Bundy lost for the umpteenth time, and Karingal elected to go with the slight wind, kicking to the bay end on a perfect sun drenched spring day.
Bundy Barry at his best
Karingal came out with the testosterone bubbling and took it right up to us with their backs as tite as a drum and aggressive play by their onballers. It was to be in to the 8 min mark before Lewis was able to break the shackles and get a snap at goal but registering a minor score.
Immediately from the kickout Kyle took a mark in the pocket and kicked truly for the first major of the game..1.1 to 0.0. Karingal were not looking good and needed something to happen and it was Justin Peckett who supplied the fire swooping on a spill and passing to Lade who marked on his chest in front of Carroll and brought up their first goal. The big man promised to be trouble…1.1 to 1.1 and level pegging.
Ash was playing back and giving their forwards some trouble taking telling marks and giving drive from the backline. Despite our onballers getting a lot of ball with Lester 7 gets and Rhys 6 in particular giving great drive it was to be at the 20 min mark before Kyle was able to get off a pass to Lewis who made no mistake ..2.3 to 1.2
Back came Karingal when Ulmer infringed on Chris Hay who goaled from the free, the Q ending with us 2 points in front…. 2.4 to 2.2
Kyle Killed the opposition with his 4 goals
The 2nd Q started with a goal before the pea in the Umpires whistle had stopped rolling when the Great Ulmer picked up on the 50 m line and goaled on the run…3.4 to 2.2
Almost immediately Kyle used his left foot to snap another goal on the run from 30 m …4.4 to 2.2 and things were beginning to look good, but Lade marked over Carroll at the other end just inside the 50 but a 50 m penalty made Lades next kick a certainty…4.4 to 3.3.
More was to come as Chris Hay kicked from in front at the 12 min mark to goal and almost get them back the lead…4.4 to 4.3 but that was to be as close as they got.
At the 15 m mark Byron got a pass off to Smurf just inside the 50 but another Karingal infringement brought a 50 m penalty and a certain goal.. play went back and forth until the 25 min when Lewis got away from Proud and marked and goaled from 35m…6.6 to 4.4
With Knackers and Roberts winning and Byron and Bundy solid we were beginning to get on top and it was Bods who got the next, grabbing the ball out of a pack and snapping true…7.6 to 4.4. In time on, Jie swooped on the ball and brought up the last goal of the Q with a prodigious kick from 50m, taking the boys to the long break 8.6.54 to 4.4.28 and a 26 point lead/
Lachie marking and converting, proved to be a wise selection choice
The Premiership Q started with Benny Tellis marking over Paxton from the ball up and goaling from an acute angle on the wing..9.6 to 4.4 and the game already over..7 min in Steve got his first from a mark in the pocket..in deep shit 10.6 to 4.4.
Next to score was Lewis from a mark in the pocket and at the 22m mark Lewis dobbed another 12.8 to 4.5
Lade pulled one back marking over Carroll, but the Q ended with the Cats on a 45 point lead 12.8.80 to 5.5.35 and Karingal about to be put out of its misery with our famous last Q Goalathon..
Smurf takes on the chrome domes
The last Q started with Lade marking in front of Carroll near the point post and slotting thru from an angle to bring up their first score. Our first was brought up at 5m when Kyle with the best play of the day goaled on the run from outside the 50m.
Immediately after Lackie was sat on by Proud and goaled from the free kick 14.10 to 6.5. Next in the goal was the scintillating Kyle who marked and goaled from 30in front.
At 15 min the ever dangerous Maca got a handoff from Lewis and ran it thru kicking it truly from the goal line, and at 20 min Tony Lester got in a great tackle on Farrelly and got a free which he put away from in front 17.12 to 8.5.
Everyone was winning and the game had become just a procession of goals with Bods goaling from 40m at 25 min and Chappy marking on a break to kick his first and the teams last of the day..Final Score 19.14.128 to 9.5.59, a whopping 69 point victory and 2011 MPNFL Premiers !!!!
My best ..The Team… but I loved Lewis’s work up forward, Kyle ditto ( how strong is this guy ??) and the big Guy..Awesome stuff.
See you next year and a Threepeat ??
