Dr Kevin Collopy Pavillion-The Home of the Stonecats-2008
Once again the season gone has been an extremely busy year in terms of organization and day to day running activities. To this end I would like to thank the many people who have given their time, in some form, to assist the club in achieving its goals.
Particularly my thanks go out to our hard working Executive committee members in John Coburn, Dave Leary and Graham Joseph. Unless you have been part of our executive team you could not appreciate the amount of time and effort given by this group of volunteers. It was, however, unfortunate that Graham’s work commitments meant that his contribution to the club treasury role diminished significantly enough for the executive to take control of our finances towards the end of the season.
The rest of the senior committee has also contributed valuable time and effort in their different portfolios and the club could not exist without your fantastic help!
A special mention to my wife Gay for her tireless efforts in her many roles around the club and her support of myself in the President’s role.
I would also like to thank and congratulate Rob Street and his Junior committee for their excellent 2008 season. As with the seniors, the amount of time and organization required to place 8 junior teams on the ground each week is enormous.
A highlight of the year was the announcement of Colin Carey as the recipient of our clubs Life Membership award at our senior presentation night. This was no doubt an extremely popular decision and congratulations again to Colin. The 2008 Best Club-person award was a fitting tribute to Noel Gregory for his outstanding year’s service. Congratulations Noel.
Although our senior side failed to win the first semi-final, it was nonetheless a good effort to finish in the finals. Congratulations to Tony Barry and the match committee and to all players who contributed to this result. It was pleasing to recently here that “Bugsy†has accepted the senior coaching role for 2009.
Our reserves effort to just miss the finals highlighted the great depth presently within the club and many of these players will be no doubt stepping up in the coming years. Congratulations to Sean LaFontaine, his assistants and to the players who showed great commitment throughout the year. We thank Sean who has decided to hang up the coaching boots after four strong years in the reserves coaching role.
Scott Mather’s and John Kenter have done a sensational job with our two U/18 sides this season with enormous help from our volunteer parents. Our Peninsula side had a fantastic year in winning the Premiership in what was a thrilling grand final against Mornington. Congratulations to Scott and the boys. Our colt’s team also performed extremely well throughout the season before losing our two finals games. Well done to Johnny, our support staff and to the boys for their efforts.
Well done to all players who received awards for their on field performances in 2008 and service to the club over a number of years.
Important thanks to all the businesses and private individuals who contributed sponsorship dollars to the club this year. Without your input we could not operate and we sincerely hope that your support
will again be with us next year and beyond. Particular thanks to major sponsors, Glass Options and Two Bays Garden Supplies.
More sponsorship dollars, however, will be required by the club over the next few years to maintain the teams and facilities that we now enjoy.
A special mention and thanks to Alan “Rocky†Hardstone for his outstanding efforts in maintaining an up to date Stonecat Website. Many agree (especially Rocky) that it is one of the best local football club websites going around and we look forward to being able to keep up with all club news at the push of a button or two!
To all our volunteers, who I may not have mentioned in this report, thank you very much for your valued contribution.
2009 will commence a new era for the Stonecats with my decision to stand down from the Presidency role. After 6 years at the helm, and my altered work commitments, it is the right time for me to handover the reigns.
I hope that my contribution over the years has been able to maintain the high level of integrity and distinction that our club demands from both our internal members and our peers. I look forward to giving my full support to the incoming President and continuing to assist the club in any way I can.
PRESIDENT
SECRETARY`S REPORT
The Secretary’s role is certainly one that cover’s many facets of the Football Club, including memberships, player registration, social events, match day administration, MPNFL & club communication and even organising breakfasts for the players during the finals. Fortunately for me, it has been a team effort and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the volunteers that assisted both me and the Club during the 2008 season.
· Chris & Col Carey for looking after the re-registration of playing group. Chris provided backup for me whenever I asked which was pretty amazing for she was still overcoming illness at the time.
Col and Chris Carey celebrating his Life Membership award at the Presentation dinner
· To our team managers, Allan Hardstone/Col Carey, Miranda Brown, Denise Swales & Margaret Falconer. They made life easy for me as team sheets and results were always completed with care and attention.
· The well organised Under 18 team management was pleasing to see and no doubt played a major part in their success this year. Steve Lean provided a great deal of assistance to Denise and I must also thank the parents that assisted when rostered on and a special thanks to Robyn Foster, Allison Lean, Sue Bodley , Amanda Roberton and Gay Lane who helped out with the breakfast’s during the finals
· To the unsung heroes that manage the timekeeping, interchange, statistician tasks & Ram Hill, especially John Robertson, Pat Strickland, Michael Clancy, Noel Gregory, Gary Charles and Graham Joseph who are there week in week out doing their bit for YCW footy club.
· To our committee persons who organised the many functions, especially Miranda, Evelyn & Sandra, a special thankyou for your efforts. It was pleasing to hear at our last meeting of the reviews that you had undertaken and to see that you were already planning for the 2009 season
This season we had three very successful luncheons, including the President’s lunch, the unveiling of the trophy cabinet lunch and the 1968 premiership reunion lunch all of which were strongly supported be members & sponsors. I must make special mention of the 1968 premiership reunion day, where 16 of the 1968 team got together with family & friends and had a day to remember. Special thanks to Coey for helping with the organisation, Gay Lane and her caterers and to Rocky who helped track down all the 1968 players and officials.
The 1969 Premiership side reunited at the Reunion lunch in 2008
· Congratulations must go to Noel Gregory on being awarded the Best Club Person for 2008, Col Carey on being awarded Life Membership and Allan “Rocky†Hardstone who was recognised as a finalist in the VCFL volunteer of the year awards and a Victorian finalist in the Toyota Country Legends award. These three guys put in an enormous amount of time and effort for the Frankston YCW Football Club and are deserved recipients of these awards.
· Special thanks to Mark Berenger, Sean Hegarty, Daniel Strickland and Paul Busuttil who assisted me with memberships and player sponsorships. Through Mark’s efforts a number of past players renewed their association with the Stonecats which was a fantastic result. Baz has some good ideas on how we might continue to grow memberships for past players and I look forward to working with him to achieve continued success in 2009.
This season we were successful in winning the tender for ground cleaning at the MPNFL finals series. The end result was $5,000 profit for the Football Club all made possible by the many volunteers that turned up each weekend. Many thanks to all those from Senior and Junior clubs that helped out.
To everyone involved in the footy club, our executive, general committee, junior committee, coaches, trainers, volunteers and members thank you for your support and hard work through out the season and I hope to see you all back at Jubilee Park in 2009.

JUNIOR CLUB PRESIDENT`S REPORT
The under 10`s lead out the Senior side in the home game vs Chelsea
Well, what a year it was, no sooner did the last siren sound for 2007, the 2008 season was upon us. Many football clubs judge their success for the year on the number of premierships they have won, well to judge the success of Frankston YCW Junior Football Club this year, you only have to look at the faces of our kids each week. Belonging to successful club is one thing, but belonging to a club that installs the right character building that not only produces success on the field, but creates better kids as they approach adolesce, is gratifying enough.
Each week I had the opportunity to watch over as many games as possible, and it was with great pride that I came away with positive enthusiasm that our kids did us proud both on and off the field. Ask anyone, the success of a club is not only won on the field but also off the field.
This year the Junior Club division was presented with some challenging tasks as we opened the season without a nominated President, plus a fairly fresh face committee of representatives keen to roll up their sleeves and get stuck into the ever challenging tasks of co-ordinating 200+ kids.
As the “belated†elected Junior President for 2008, the challenge for me was to bring into the club a new form of management that was to be used as basis grounding for years to come to enable new committee members a steam line approach to running a prospering Junior football division, whilst maintaining close interaction with all the committee members, members/parents and players. This I was relatively successful as we identified key areas that need improving upon.
Success this year on the field was extremely encouraging; as we witnessed age groups that struggled in the past years, make it to the finals. Our Under 16’s successfully completed the home and away season with only 1 loss, and successfully completed the finals campaign against arch rivals Mt. Eliza as true 2008 Grand Finalists. Well done guys. We wish you all well as you take the next step into the senior club.
Success off the field was with mixed results, particularly in regards to social events. We had 3 major events planned for the year, with only 2 events supported by a number of members. This is an important issue that has to be addressed. On a brighter note though, it was pleasing on our Sunday award nights. Many thanks must go to Gay Lane for the preparation of the Sunday night meals as they were certainly appreciated to those who stayed back and had dinner.
Financially – we believe our Junior division did reasonably well this year; however this item does need improving. For everyone’s information, many of the current members may or may not know, the Junior division does not pay for any major outgoings towards running Frankston YCW Football Club. This means items like rent, power, gas; etc are all paid for by the Senior Club. It becomes disappointing to hear from many, comments like – “whatever we make always goes to the seniorsâ€, or “the seniors always get it anyway†– well I can only say – if we were charged for the true percentage share of the outgoings for the wonderful facilities that we often take for granted – then we would have to put up our membership fees quite substantially.
This is why the social interaction participation is a very vital source of income for our division. Additionally, player insurance costs go up each year, team registration costs increase each year. To put a team onto the field, without considering jumper replacements, is a very expensive commitment.
To Audrey Bedford – a job well done in trying circumstances.
To my executive committee, – Glenn Hatch, Mick Theobald, Lyndsay Kirkwood & Audrey Bedford – I thank-you for your support and your timely ear when I called during sometimes inappropriate hours.
To the general committee – Brian Hillborn, Brendan Cole, Michelle Bryant, John Buckley, & Janine King a very big thank-you, your efforts were most appreciated. To our 2 new committee member Rick Stoll & Ron Stevens a big thank-you for your help.
Congratulations must go to Michelle Bryant for successfully been voted the “Most Valuable Junior Club Person†for 2008. Michelle had the job of club Registrar for the last 2 years, and has been a co-ordinator / supporter of all social events. – well done Michelle.
To all our players & parents, – a very warm thank-you for your support, encouragement, and suggestions throughout the year. 2009 promises to be more productive and I welcome participation in joining the committee and putting forward you ideas to make this club more successful both on and off the field.
To all our sponsors – and there are too many to name – a very generous thank-you. Without your commitment and generous support through the year, it would be very difficult to maintain the activities that we endeavour to provide to our kids.
To our coaches, assistant coaches, & team managers, – please except our thanks, as your personnel time given in providing your expertise in often trying conditions is often overlooked by many people.
To John Buckley, Lyndsay Kirkwood & Brian Hillborn for co-ordinating these important people, a very special thank you.
Our challenges for 2009 –

- Financial Development
- Social events

HISTORIAN BOOK AND WEB REPORT
Club History
One of over 2000 fotos digitised, with this one very topical, being the opening
of the Annual General Meeting of 1967
Seated being; Jim McKew Treasurer, Keiren Brady President, Fr Murphy, Jack Black, and Dr Collopy Sec
This year saw major inroads being made into the collection and collation of historical items and data pertaining to the past and present history of the YCW Senior Club such as to provide a firm foundation for the present and future documentation of the Clubs history and roots.
Each of the 560 players who have played senior football with us has now been identified
and their Christian names determined together with the number of senior games and finals played. The number of goals kicked by each senior player since 1991 has also been tabulated with the hope that someday all past player’s full goal careers will be identified..
Reserve players have not been left out of the calculations, as all such players since 1987 have also been identified and their games played and goals kicked tabulated.
All past club Coaches and Team Managers have now been identified and the final positions of all our teams in yearly competition researched together with lists of Club Best & Fairest and leading goalkickers in all 3 grades.
Research on the Stats of the Senior team match history has also been completed with record wins, losses against all other sides now available together with stats on the family/club relationships that have produced such great and ongoing benefits to the Club.
All the clubs collection of over 2000 hard copy Fotos have now been identified and digitised to provide a permanent record of the clubs History….the next step is to hopefully identify and record all the players in our extensive list of team Fotos
A major project for the year now complete was the location and capture of photographs of all our past Presidents to provide a permanent display of these Club dignitaries. It is hoped to continue this display of eminent worthies by producing a similar foto gallery of Senior Club Captains.
Also completed and hung were the remainder of the outstanding Club Premiership plaques detailing the players and positions played in all our grand final victories
Lastly it was possible with the help of Dave Leary to begin the long job of collating and filing all the Clubs hard copy records in the clubs new filing system in accordance with best practise.
Web Page

Rocky, always on the lookout for a good snap, took over 10000 shots
during the season to get just 1800 suitable for posting on the Web
The Web page has had a phenomenal year with record web hit numbers being recorded during the football season, on average receiving some 600 hits per week , peaking at nearly 900 hits per week with maximum daily hits of 200 plus..hopefully with a little more consumer interest the magic 1000 barrier will fall in 2009….
This season to October, the clubs web page was hit an amazing 17000 times from 4400 different sources, each hit staying on an average 21/2 mins and viewing 2 pages…for a total 27000 page views.
The football season really gets the hit counter moving , although even the off season registers 100+/wk

Where the 17000 hits come from….over 40 Countries/territories have hit our web site
With finalization of the player data it was possible to place this on the web in the form of an innovative Encyclopaedia which provides a link to a profile of the players. All players from the last 4 years or so, together with most of the high profile past players, have now had research on their playing careers completed and their profile documented on the web with the hope that all players will eventually receive similar coverage.
All senior practice, home & away and finals games and most of the Under 18 games together with a smattering of Colts and reserve games were photographed and put on Rockys roundup together with a match synopsis.
A total of 1820 fotos were selected from over 10000 digital shots taken of match day games this season, enhanced, cropped and downloaded to Rockys Roundup, to produce the most extensive gallery of football fotos on the Web.
Stats and facts, event coverage and news items were also featured regularly together with a major long running item involving the selection of both the League and the clubs Teams of The Century.
New items to the Web in 2008, receiving weekly updates and web interest were the player auction results, `Blessed Events` page for weddings birthdays, births etc, and a page which attracted a large following in the` team selections`, posted every Friday prior to the games.
`The Shop`,… the clubs merchandise page, received a major overall and redesign to bring it in line with the layouts offered by major apparel web sites..
Bugs Babble was also introduced to provide up to date team information to players, with the year being rounded out with an update of records and profiles for current players and the first time production of an under 18 player foto gallery
Over 120 news items were posted on the front page of the web site, encompassing a myriad of articles and information together with the publishing of 175 separate web pages to create 74 separate Roundup articles involving everything from Mouses wedding to the Colts fixtures.….all in all a busy year for the Premier Football Club Web page on the Peninsula…..….the only way is up!!
Club History Book
Research for the book on the history of the club, and its players, continued throughout the year, on records held by the League, Libraries, club and past players and officials. It is now estimated that the actual writing of the book will be complete by the end of November and that proof reading, layout, selection of fotos, tables, charts etc will take a further 2 months so that the Publisher should receive the final gallies of the book mid February.
Typesetting, layout and print off would be expected to take a further 2 months with the book hitting the shelves late April..
Rocky Hardstone.
PUBLICATION OF `THE HISTORY OF FRANKSTON YCW FC` REPORT
The actual researching of the history of our club began 2 ½ years ago when I approached John Coburn – in a moment of madness – and strongly suggested that documentation of the club’s development should be implemented as soon as possible.
I submitted a plan to the Committee and with their blessing, the work began.
What followed has been many trips to the MPNFL Offices in Somerville, hours of research at the Frankston Library, numerous telephone calls and interviews with past players and officials, many hours of typing/editing, and many, many coffee breaks with Allan Hardstone. Allan’s contribution has been simply immeasurable in terms of his knowledge of the club and his creativity in statistical analysis of many areas of the club’s operations.
The history now covers the following areas: Those Early days – 1959-1970; The 1980’s; The 1990’s; and 2000 and Beyond. In addition, there are 30 articles covering such areas as Coaches, Jubilee Park, Premiership Reports, Juniors, Scoreboards, Best and Fairest winners, YCW/Pines rivalry, and Club Room extensions. Appendices include leading goalkickers, Honour Board, Coaches and Managers, and any other statistics that Rocky can create!
This year will see the completion of the research and the finalization of the writing of the book with Publication of the tome some time in the first half of 2009.
Whilst its size is approaching “War and Peaceâ€, I have enjoyed the project immensely in that it has provided me with the opportunity to meet up once again with former players, and senior and junior coaches and officials. One particular bonus is the fact that I have established a friendship with Margaret and Allan Hardstone and one that will continue for some time.

FOOTBALL REPORT
The season started off with a weekend camp at Gilwell Park
RESULTS
Seniors
The Senior team had a disappointing finish to the season, losing to Seaford in the First Semi Final. We were well in the game at half-time (2 points down) but Seaford repeated their third quarter effort from the previous year’s Grand Final and blew us away in the third quarter. We were reasonably confident that we could have given the flag a shake if we got over Seaford but they were too good on the day and went on to win the premiership convincingly. Our slow start to the season cost us any chance of a top 2 finish and despite a strong second half of the season, we did not deliver under the pressure of a cut throat final. A real positive was the further development of our list, with greater opportunities for our younger players.
Reserves
The Reserves team missed the finals with a team that was good enough to be there in September. The team lost a number of games that it was expected to win. A pleasing aspect was that a number of these young players have developed well and will play Senior football, as some of them did this season.
The boys get a bit heated in the home game vs Karingal
Under 18s
The standout team for our club in 2008 was the Peninsula Division Under 18 team that played some scintillating football in a hard fought finals campaign to win the premiership. Twice during the finals, it seemed the team would lose. At one stage during the Second Semi Final, the team was over 8 goals down but still found a way to win. With less than a minute to go in the Grand Final and needing 2 goals to win, all seemed lost but again this impressive young team willed itself to victory. Belief is an amazing thing in football. Watching this team during the finals was very exciting and all our supporters were proud of their performance. The effort of our Colts team should also be applauded and this team also managed to play finals football. The Colts is now a regular part of our Under 18 set-up (over 4 consecutive seasons and with more to come). It was also extremely pleasing that we had 2 U18 players regularly playing in the Seniors this season in Pat Heijden and Ben Lean. There are a number of the Under 18 players that will graduate to Senior ranks next season, which augurs well for our future.
The Senior list continued to change again this season. We lost some quality Senior players (Andrew Kiely overseas, Josh Leary interstate, Glen Boyd to Swan Hill, Daniel Marshall to Frankston Bombers, Adrian Matthews & Brendan Long to Mordialloc and Mark Berenger to retirement) but were able to add some quality recruits to some of our own home grown talent.
Our recruits this season included Brad Ulms (Frankston VFL), Glenn Manson (Frankston VFL), Mark Watson, Andrew Buckenara (Subiaco), Brendan Rinaldi (Subiaco), Andrew Douglas (Mornington) and Sam Reddaway & Andrew Borrie returning to us permanently from Frankston VFL. The Under 18 graduates included Josh Exner, Steve Roberts, Kyle Hutchison, Dylan Hoare, and Michael Chaplin.
Players to make their Senior debut 2008 were Andrew Douglas, Daniel Strickland, Pat Heijden, Kyle Hutchison and Dylan Hoare. We also had a number of players listed with Frankston VFL, including Byron Barry, Mitch Bosward, James Degenhardt, and Khalid Foggi.
.
Brendan Meagher cemented his position in the backline with a great second season while
Kyle Hutchinson made his senior debut along with 4 other Under 18 graduates
There will be some minor changes to our Senior list for next season but we are very excited by the prospect of developing some of our Under 18 premiership team into regular Senior players. On the recruiting front, we are hopeful that Andrew Kiely will be returning to us from his overseas trip and maybe one or two other priorities will be targeted.
Senior Selectors Brad Ostermeyer, Stephen Wyatt and Ian Rennie try to
pull the away game vs Eady Asp out of the fire…unsuccessfully !!
The match committee consisted of Tony Barry (Senior Coach), Ian Rennie (Assistant Coach), Steve Wyatt (Chairman of Selectors), Brad Ostermeyer (Selector), Daniel Anderson (Assistant Coach & Senior Captain), Glenn Michie (Assistant Coach), Sean Lafontaine (Reserves Coach) and Nick Schneider (Reserves Assistant Coach). Thanks to the match committee in what is a very difficult and demanding role.
Tony ‘Bugsy’ Barry has now completed his second season as Senior Coach and is committed to continuing the development of our club in 2009. We need to continue to develop a selfless culture where every player thinks about the team first, second and third. We want players that will do anything for their team-mates and their club.
We also take this opportunity to thank Sean Lafontaine who has coached the Reserves team for the last 4 seasons. Whilst Laf is disappointed that he was not able to take the team to premiership success he has developed really well as a coach and has played a crucial role in developing our young players into Senior footballers. The Reserves coaching job is a tough gig but he has handled the demands well with a young family.
Coach Sean Lafontaine gives his last pre match address to his Reserve side
Scott Mathers has now been with us for 2 seasons and what a coup he has been for our club. He has taken on the job of coaching the entire Under 18 squad and has been able to take our Peninsula Division team to 2 Grand Finals for 1 premiership. Most importantly, he is clearly developing the next batch of Senior Stonecat stars. Scott has been ably supported by Assistant Coach Graham Bodley, Assistant Coach (Colts) John Kenter, and Jugs. John Kenter did an outstanding job with the Colts and we are thrilled to have a man of his calibre looking after our young players. We are also very pleased that Scott is continuing in this role again in 2009, to be assisted by Peter Baker as Assistant Coach and John Kenter as Assistant Coach (Colts).
Scott Mathers, Graham Bodley, Josh Exner, Michell Swales and Bill Coburn, just
some of the staff necessary to get the thirds on the ground for the grand final
Our team managers again did a fantastic job led by Colin Carey and Rocky Hardstone (Seniors), Miranda “Mrs B†Brown (Reserves) and Denise Swales (Under 18s). Thanks must also go to our timekeepers (John Robertson and Colin Carey & others) and interchange stewards. The running duties were carried out by Neil Reddaway (Seniors), Mark Berenger (Reserves) Jugs Jones (Under 18s) and others.
Our training and medical staff were excellent – John Goble (Head Trainer), Midge Rossetto (trainer), Kirsty Bennett (trainer), Rebecca Rand (trainer), David Huang (trainer), Allan Hardstone (trainer), Billy Coburn (trainer), Simon Hoare (trainer), and physio provided by Jack from Langwarrin Sports Medicine. The Injury clinic held every Monday night, which provided free physio (paid for by the club) to all players (seniors and juniors), was also a huge hit again and undoubtedly helped with our low injury toll. Thanks also go to Ryan Poole and his staff for the specialist fitness training and rehabilitation sessions for the entire season.
Rocky plying his trade as Trainer, puts Daniel Stricklands

The enormous contribution that Allan Rocky Hardstone makes to the running of our football club also needs to be acknowledged. He simply does the jobs that others won’t. He basically runs the preseason training regime in terms of equipment, medical supplies and training gear. He is also a trainer throughout the entire season including all training nights. He is also property steward, merchandise officer, website editor, historian, team manager and committee member. Thank you Rocky and well done on another Herculean effort.
An acknowledgement must also go to Noel Gregory (Best Clubperson) and Colin Carey (Life Member), who both thoroughly deserve their awards. Finally, acknowledgement of our hard working Committee and Greg Lane for leading the club as President in his 6th term.
From a football perspective, congratulations to all the individual award winners and particularly the Best & Fairest winners for all grades, Anthony Barry for his 2nd consecutive B&F in the Seniors, Nick Brown for his Reserves Best & Fairest and David Bodley & Matt Sibberas (Peninsula U18s) & Sam
Baker (Colts).
.
Benny Tellis had a fine year polling 4th in the B& F behind winner Bundy Barry
Junior Development
Our Juniors continue to do reasonably well in comparison to other junior clubs that have many more teams. It cannot be stressed enough how important the Junior component of our club is to the overall success of the entire club. The Juniors are important in their own right but are also absolutely fundamental to the health and long term viability of the Senior part of the club. The Junior Executive are doing a great job in leading this part of our club.
Our club has the capacity to and the right people to be the Premier football club on the Mornington Peninsula. We are not far away from this goal but everyone must play their part for us to achieve this goal. Off the field, we have considerable work to do to restore our financial position.

SENIORS COACHES REPORT 2008
Bugs talks tactics with Tony Lester before the 1st Semi v Seaford
Our pre season wasn’t as strong as the previous year due to a late finish to 2007 which caused a delay to our pre-season with many players missing during this early part of the year. I believe this was reflective of our slow start to the season. I truly believe a good pre-season with good player numbers sets up a solid foundation for the coming season and this is why the coaching staff encourages all players to attend the pre-season training sessions.
It was a slow start to the season and at the half way mark we would have liked to be in the position of 6-3 win/loss, this wasn’t the case and factors such as new players to the Club and the blooding of young players combined with the loss of experienced players from last year was going to take its toll on the ladder, with us losing to teams that we just shouldn’t have lost to. Also, with my work commitments taking me interstate, this also played a factor in the settlement of the team at the start of the season.
It was at this point that we had two options: to fall away or work twice as hard as a complete team to go forward. We took the second option and players began to understand each other’s game and began to know each other off the field as well. As a playing group we set the goal to win 7 of the last 9 games and by doing so we would be in finals contention.
Whilst we made the finals coming in at 4th position, we really needed to finish in the top two for the double chance. We were confident in beating all the teams in the finals, but this required us to be a complete team unit. This means all players playing for the better of the team and not yourself. In the past two years we have improved in this area, but we won’t hold the up the Premiership Cup until we are 100% committed to each other and the team before ourselves.
For the players to achieve the ultimate success, they must have the total support and positive encourage of everybody around the Club including committee, coaching staff and supporters. It might be 22 players to run on the field, but it takes the many Club people behind them to get them over the line. We’ve seen the support base of Seaford and Langwarrin and we need all of the support, plus more, of the Club to even match these teams. So let’s all do this for 2009 for us all to share in the glory of a Premiership.
My first thanks goes to Pat Strickland (apology for missing you on presentation night) for an important and difficult job providing stats for the team. Pat does his role without question, for the team and not himself – and that’s where we all need to get to. My other thanks are to the coaching staff: Ian Rennie, Assistant Coach; Sean La Fontaine, Reserves Coach; Nick Schneider, Assistant Reserves Coach; Steve Wyatt, Chairman of Selectors; Brad Oystermeyer, Selection Committee; Neil Reddaway, Runner. We could not achieve what we do without the calibre of these people behind us. Their knowledge, commitment and time dedicated is beyond words and I cannot thank them enough. I hope they all stay on, in some capacity, for 2009.
The three wise men, Brad Ostermeyer, Ian Rennie and Bugs Barrie before the 1st Semi
I would like to thank John Goble and his team of trainers Rocky, Midge, Kirsty, Bec and Dave who all did a fantastic job for the players both on and off the field also Langwarrin Sports and Medical Centre for Monday and Thursday injury assessment sessions.
Thanks to Rocky for all the behind the scenes work for myself and his second to none work on the website. Also thanks to to Rocky and Col Carey my Co-Team Managers, who are fountains of knowledge in the TM role. And thanks to their protégé (watch out boys!) Miranda Brown. These people keep me organised.
Special thanks goes to the Leaders of the playing group, who have stood up and totally embraced their position. This is an important role within the Club and this group is working hard to get to the level we need to be at. My thanks to our Team Captains, Daniel Anderson, Zannon Daff, Glenn Michie and Bundy Barry.
To the executive committee: Greg, John, Brad and Dave, thank you for the opportunity to coach at YCW. We had high expectations from the previous year and had hoped to go 1 further. It was not to be this year for reasons already mentioned, but I appreciate the chance to continue what we have started. As we are not yet finished.
See you all in Season 2009

RESERVE COACH`S REPORT – Sean Lafontaine
It is with mixed emotions that I present the Reserves report for 2008.
Firstly the team’s performance this year was very inconsistent ultimately resulting in missing out on a spot in the top four and a shot at the premiership which was an aim we had at the start of this year after coming so close the year before.
We started the year with some key personnel from last year’s group heading elsewhere to look for greater opportunities which impacted greatly on our depth, experience and leadership. This was compensated with the influx though of some quality players coming up from the U/18’s.
The year started well and we turned the half way mark of the season with 6 wins and 3 losses to be comfortably in the four.
We headed into the second half of the season with great confidence that we could make an impact on this year’s competition however this was not to occur. A disappointing loss to Mt Eliza at home was followed by an embarrassing 100 point loss to the eventual premiers Seaford and then a gut wrenching 5 point loss to Edi Asp at home despite being 2 goals up with as many minutes to go. Even though after this game our season was over, ultimately as I look back over the season this game was ‘season defining’ with Edi Asp ending up taking the final spot in the top four.
Easy wins against Karingal, Chelsea and Pines set up a crucial game against last year’s premiers and our nemesis team, Bonbeach at their home ground. For one of the few times this year the group was 100% focussed on the task at hand and followed the game plan and direction for the entire game to eventually come away with a 10 goal victory which was the highlight of the year no doubt.
This set up a must win game against Mornington at Mornington and unfortunately we weren’t able to play this game at the level we expected of ourselves ( like the Bonbeach game) and a heart wrenching 2 point loss ended our season.
Without wanting to make to many excuses for the team, a mixture of injuries, experience, on field leadership and lack of depth together with the constant turning over of players from week to week were contributing factors to our performance this year.
On the positive side the development of some exciting talent will ensure the longer term success of the club in the years to come. Dylan Hoare, Steve Meagher and Kyle Hutchinson had several tastes of senior footy and with another full pre season under their belt will become regular senior players,
Michael Chaplin has enormous talent and has the potential to hold a regular gig a full forward in the ones, Trent Cowled and Dylan Bosward are developing quite nicely in their key back positions
Andrew Taylor at last played some regular senior footy which is much deserved and despite lack of opportunities in the seniors our B&F for the year Nick Brown is ready, I believe, to make the step up into being a regular running half back in the seniors next year.
The Reserve side about to be knocked of their perch in the last game of the year.
Thanks to Nick Schneider for helping out as assistant coach. Being reserves coach is a tough gig however Nick’s support and great understanding of the game were vital to me during a difficult year.
As I have stepped aside as Reserves coach I really do hope that Nick gets the opportunity to take the Reserves forward.
Thanks also to Baz for being the runner this year and just as importantly for his much valued input and insight on match day.
Thanks to my on field leaders Trent Cowled and Dylan Bosward and especially Stricko, who I am so glad finally played his first senior game for the club and Heggars who have stood by me over the last 4 years through good and bad times. These guys epitomise what Frankston YCW Football club is all about!
A very special thank you to Miranda Brown for her tireless work behind the scenes as Team Manager making sure that the team had everything they needed. Everyone enjoyed having Miranda around especially when faced with the disappointment of a loss we were unable to hold on to that emotion for too long as Miranda’s bright personality always made us realise that footy is not a matter of life and death, well almost !!!!!

Thanks also to Bugs, Ian Rennie and the rest of the selection committee for their support during the year. I have learnt a lot in my 4 years as Reserves coach and wish Bugs well for next year.
Finally thanks to the committee particularly the Executive Greg Lane, Dave Leary, Brad Ostermeyer and John Coburn. Your tireless work and commitment to the club is fantastic and your ongoing support to me was much appreciated.
Lastly thanks to Liz, Matt and Abbey who during footy season over the past 4 years and I guess for the last 10 years with the roles I have had with the club, have had only a part time dad. It has been tough on them with me spending so much time at the club however your support to me has been unquestioned and hopefully next year I can make it up to you guys.
Thank you very much.

UNDER 18s COACHES` REPORT
Coach Mathers congratulating his marvels after their nail
biting Grand Final win against Mornington
There are a number of ways in which success can be measured; which ever which way you choose to measure it, season 2008 can only be described as a huge success.
The obvious highlight was the Peninsula U18 premiership victory over Mornington with the last kick of the year, but there were however, many other positives for the year, including;
. Colts making the preliminary final (going down to Mornington by a point)
. A list of 54 players for the year
. 40 Players getting an opportunity to play Peninsula grade U18s
. Peninsula side winning 19 games out of 20
. 2 Players playing a high number of Senior games (Ben Lean & Pat Heijden)
. Representative Football, both MPNFL and Vic East Teams (Ben Lean)
. Two Bottom aged players polling in top five of League Best and Fairest
Andrew Knight and Matt Sibberas
. Watching 6 players from last years U18 Grand Final play in the seniors, beating
Seaford at Seaford.
Before the season began we launched our season with an induction day at the club.
Nearly 40 players and many parents attended were we outlined the code of conduct for the season.
This was an extremely important session as we introduced 30 bottom age players to the club over the course of the season
Coach Mathers makes some positional changes at half time in the
Grand Final which changed the course of the game
With all of these boys joining the Senior club, and experiencing the culture of a Senior football club for the first time, it can’t be understated how important it is to outline the ground rules, for these young men.
A number of topics were covered, including Alcohol, Drug taking, as well as talking about general behavioral standards.
On this day the team also appointed the 2008 leadership group, which had 7 players involved.
The leadership group played a role in setting discipline standards for the team, looking after social functions, and making sure bottom age players were welcomed into the group, as well as setting standards for behavior on and off the field.
The leadership group also took an active role when the whole side sat down and set there goals for the 2008.
It is pleasing that all the goals the team set for itself in March, were achieved.
After a long and at times testing pre-season, made difficult by the drought, we were able to field two sides for the year, with the Colts competition continuing for season 2008.
With a list of 54, numbers for the Colts were nearly always good, and these numbers helped produce positive results for the team, as well as helping to raise the standards of the team, and reducing any perceived stigma of the Colts system.
Having a Colts team allowed us to expose nearly 40 players throughout the year to our Peninsula side. Giving this opportunity to some our younger players, as well as being able to train all year with some of our talented top age players, will aid the development of these boys enormously in the future.
Right throughout the year the success of the Peninsula side was underpinned by players interchanging between the two sides without a hitch.
Even though some players were not over the moon about being selected in the colts, it was important that we treated the group as a squad, rather than two separate teams.
Upwards of 15 players are now headed towards Senior football, many of these have the talent to succeed at Senior level, some will step straight in, others will need a couple of years. Hopefully everyone has patience as these players develop.
The immediate future looks bright, with a strong group of top age players for next year, with an U16 premiership side joining there ranks.
Andrew Knight and Harley McLenaghan will be back again next year
However, the Club will need to work harder in forging good relationships with our feeder clubs as a number of our neighboring rivals seem to be putting more time and resource into these juniors.
If we wish to continue to have a strong Under 18 program, we may need to work a little harder in the future.
There are a number of people that need to be acknowledged:
. Graeme Bodley who did a great job over the past 2 years as my Assistant coach
. John Kenter in his first year as Colts coach
. Jugs who continues to get our team as fit as any of our opponents
. Denise Swales for her tireless work as Team Manager and mother duck
. Margaret Falconer for a great job as Colts Team Manager
. Stewart Wade for assisting John Kenter on game day
Also a big thank you to all the training staff that assisted both sides throughout the year.
The 2009 season will be here before we know it, I hope it will be as rewarding as this year.
