16th July Stonecats v The Sharks at the Aquarium.. Weather Balmy !!
After last Saturdays record breaking win against Mornington, Coach Barry was loath to make any changes, but what could he do with favourite son Bundy now available after his 3 week Umpire sponsored holiday…..the son plays !! Also the Coach was blessed with a cornucopia of new faces ready and available to hit the park, and Chappy, The Grover and Rohan Bleeker, felt the wrath from a 160 point win and were axed to allow the return of The Great Ulmer and the tenacious and talented Benny Poole. All icing on the cake for the side to play Bon Beach at the Aquarium..
Chappy was however called upon to take the field, after Andy Keily withdrew on match morning from a bad attack of the snuffles, and it was with this 22 that the Stonecats started the game under a dull sky, kicking to the beach end…Bon Appetit !!
Benny Tellis..the consumate footballer !!
Kicking with a slight crosswind the Stonecats attacked right from the bell and immediately put the Bonbeach back line under pressure with Eames winning the ruck, Bundy a ball magnet and Rhys (10 touches) and Dougy, 7, on fire on the wings, and in the 5th min the forward push paid off, with Bods kicking the first goal from close range. The Shark defence tightened up in answer to this and the game flowed back and forth with Blake, Byron and Hackett steady in defence until Chappy took a solid mark and goaled from directly in front to go two goals up.
The game then sea sawed with the Sharks putting up a spirited defence until the floodgates burst at the 19 min mark with a succession of goals that put the game away even at this early stage ..Lewis goaled from close in followed by Bods 2nd from a snap in the goal square.. Not to be outdone, Maca followed up 2 min later to crack his first of the day from a sneaky goal square snap, followed immediately by a similar, but even more sneaky trick tap shot from the goal line. The short break saw us in a winning position 6.5.41 to 1.3.9
The Big Unit gets treated harshly…and no free ??
The second Q saw the game go in to hibernation as Blake and Zannon took over the backline while the forwards found it impossible to score goals, with Chappy and Lewis, who was being well held, missing sitters from in front before Chappy took a great running mark at the 15 min mark, to kick a pearler from 50 m. That was to be our only goal for the Q, and the long break saw us being outscored 16 to 9 to go in7.8.50 to 3.7.25.
The 3rd saw the game fluctuating as before, but The Sharks were saved from further embarrassment, by some very indifferent kicking for goal, with 9 shots being missed for the Q, until Patty Heijden scored from long range at the 20 min mark and Maca, sunk his 3rd with another sneaky shot from the goal line !! With Jie and Knackers supreme up back and Maca and Poole dominant up forward, we went to the Oranges , 9.17.71 to 6.8.44 having won the Q by 2 points.
Byron continues to head towards redemption..Hally Luya !!
The last Q saw the boys back on song, as our fitness and talent had its toll on the Sharks, with Steve Roberts having his best run of the day on ball, with 9 touches, Tellis 6, Bundy 6, Kyle ,7, peppering the forward line and Bods, 8 pings, stepping up and taking over from the injured Eames. Heijden scored from a long way out to set up the Q, before Tellis scored 2 in succession, one from a mark directly in front, and one from similar, on the goal line.
The Big Rig then blotted his copy book, missing two from the goal square and one from in front while Chappy chipped in missing one from a great mark 35 m in front, then redeeming himself by putting away the last goal from a tremendous mark and kick from 50 m.
The dismembering of the Sharks was complete with the final scores showing 13.21.99 to 7.9.51, double their score but an indiferant day in front of the sticks.. Better sides wont be so kind !!!!!?????
My best, had to figure in The Bods, with 30 possessions for the day, two goals and a great day in the ruck and around the ground and filling the gap went Ash went on early leave, certainly the best game Ive seen him play.
Not far behind were Blake, a tower of strength on the backline, Rhys, 18 touches, also having his best day on the wing, either in attack or defence, Maca with 3 goals and a feast of hard ball gets and Benny Tellis with12 kicks and 12 HAND BALLS finish of my list..although Bugs Boy was pretty good to !!
