Stonecats-Minor Premiers for 2010

Posted on: August 22nd, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

With the weather going to be extremely cold, and the welcome decidedly Icy at the Aviary, Bugs decided bring back that firebrand Maca, to help warm things up and light some fires on the forward line.

And to facilitate this Bugs elected  to give Ben Hackett some much needed R&R before the finals hit us..so with very much our usual side on-board, we hit the Campaign trail to Edithvale on election day, with a view to voting out the Eagles..

So kicking towards the Frankston end, the boys faced the first centre bounce, in what could only be called a glue pot ….hit the Link !!

On Saturday our Under 18 boys face Edithvale/Aspendale in the Elimination Final at the Pines ground, while Schneider’s Seconds go toe to toe with Seaford on Sunday at Frankston Park in the Qualifier. Everyone wishes both teams all success in their endeavours, while the Seniors take advantage of a week off.

All supporters are encouraged to get down to the games and help get the boys thru to the next round….be there !!

Seagulls Plucked !! … back to the think tank ??

Posted on: August 16th, 2010 by Rocky 1 Comment

Three losses this year..not many, so Ill Refresh your minds and tabulate them !!

Round 10     1 Point loss       Seaford 9.10.64 to Stonecats 8.15.63

Round 11    10 Point loss     Karingal 13.12.90 to Stonecats 11.14.80……

……and Round 8, the rubbish that started it all… 10 Point loss, Chelsea 12.11.83 to Stonecats 9.19.73.. Using their now famous “Vee formation”, the Seagulls forced us wide in to the pockets for our shots at goal, producing the wildly inaccurate kicking  resulting in 19 points, and a 10 point loss, even though we had 5 more scoring shots !!

The question for Bugs, as we  again came up against now 5th placed Chelsea, was how would we combat the Vee, and how would we  fair against a side some were now touting as a possible finals threat, with red hot form and on a  5-1 winning streak ??

Locking himself away from Evelyn and the kids, with his stats and matchups, Bugs decided to go with a side that had answered all the challenges thrown at it over the last month, and just bring back Ben Hackett, (refreshed after his rest),  to replace The Great Ulmer, who had made appointments with his stylist and personal photographer for that afternoon.

But then he really took himself outside the box, and with a flash of brilliance/inspiration..call it what U will, decided to include  Andy Kiely (recently renovated and repaired) to combat the “Vee”, replacing Stingray aspirant Rohan Bleeker, who headed off  to the Dewcutters to bolster their finals chances. In that mindset, Bundy’s Battlers took the field, kicking to the Melbourne end against a howling gale.. All to play for…hit the Link !!

Weeks Hilite..Benny Poole gets his 50th Senior Game !! .  Ie  Senior not 1st XVIII

Also don’t forget that Voting is compulsory Saturday between the  hours of  8 am and 6 pm. If you are looking for a place to vote on the way to Eady Asp, try John Paul College in Mc Mahons Road, its guaranteed to take 20 min to fight your way  from the entrance to the Ballot Box.

If you are unsure on whom to cast your Ballot for, after the last 3 years of Labor Government, you could do no worse than put pen to paper to put this Candidate in Canberra…..hit the Link !!…..Hes running on a plank of ;  “no child will be without a football by the year 2020″ and “The MCG  to be the permanent base for Stonecat home games from Sunday” !!

Stonecat First XVIII and Reserves Skin Undisiplined Pythons !!

Posted on: August 9th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

Not having graced the position since 1992, the lure of top spot on the ladder, and Minor Premiers must remain a goal of Coach Barry and his Boys, and Saturdays game against Pines was crucial, in remaining in the hunt for this and top spot at the end of the H & A`s. Due diligence was therefore required by the Coach and Selectors to make sure we could answer any tactics employed by The Pythons.

With Maca unavailable due to a slight Hamstring problem and Hackett out because he was very tired, Eames was pulled strait back in after his finger operation and Dylan was elevated after his great game in the Magoo’s the week before. Unfortunately, although Tim Gillam’sstarburned brightly in his inaugural kickoff  last Saturday, it went out just as quickly, as his stay in the ones was terminated with the inclusion of Stingrays Rohan Bleeker.

With this side ready to roll, the boys kicked to the Railway end, in perfect weather conditions, but on a saturated and muddy oval…….hit the Link !!  for all the play including the last Q of the Reserves and a David Bodley appreciation Gallery !!

To check up on the Stats from the last time we played Chelsea, when rolled to the tune of 10 points…go to this link !!   and take particular note..bring back the pole !!

Highlites of this week.. Big claps and retrospective cheers for The Great Ulmer and Michael Chaplin who played their 50th senior games last week, Andy Keily who hit the same mark in round 14 and Andy Douglas whose 50th celebrations went thru to the keeper 2 matches ago totally ignored by one and all !!

Retrospective congratulations to all these boys from everyone at the Club..

Other highlites are Pooly who gets to 49 games next Saturday and Zannon who reaches 94 games in his never ending quest to reach 100..I’m excited..!!

YCW Senior and Reserve Golds Beat Blues-Convincingly..Roos Tail Off in Last Half !!

Posted on: August 3rd, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

After the 65 point demolition of Langwarrin at the Stonecave in round 6, Coach Barry felt confident that he had the right game plan and match ups to take on the Roos Unit, even including their YCW expat Brigade, which had now grown to 8 old boys, with the inclusion this time round of A J Borrie..

Going thru his copious collection of notes on opposition players, Bugs decided to bring in the untried Reserve halfback, Tim Gilham, for his first senior game, to replace the once again unavailable (sore knee) Andy Kiely, who has recently had more ins and outs than The Great Ulmer !!  Equally controversial, was his matchup of  Blake`The Snake`McCormack, with`Gun`forward Brad Wakeling, Maca on to Tomamichael, and super in form, Paul Wintle on whoever started between the big sticks.

In perfect sunny conditions, Bugs Boys kicked toward the Cranbourne Road end with the aid of a light wind…………hit the link !!

Schneider’s Seriously Scintillating Seconds meantime, had a tuff  day at the Office in the first half, from Langy which belied their 7th place position, holding us to just a one goal lead at the long break and causing Coach Schneider to raise his voice in the half time speech !!!!.

The last Q saw Langy put thru their last goal for the game while The Stoners put on another 2 strait to finish easy winners 9.7.61 to 4.12.36, again showing the benefits of accurate kicking !!!!!!!

Next week our Reserves most important game of the year against Pines, where a win will lock in 3rd place and the double chance with games following…. against cellar dweller Eady and 7th placed Chelsea ….

Stonecats Climb The Mountain..By 63 Points

Posted on: July 25th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

The only downside of last Saturdays game against Bon Beach, was the dislocation to Ash`s little pinkie which caused him to be unavailable for Coach Barry’s team selection to take it up to ladder leader  Mt Eliza.

Bugs had a ready made replacement however, as Andy Keily had been into the soup and lemon juice and had overcome his sniffle attack and was able to take his place in the side in the ruck.

Apart from this forced change, the side remained the same as that which demolished the Sharks. Winning the toss the boys kicked towards the Melbourne end in overcast conditions and witha slight wind……hit the Link !!

Hilite of this week…meeting our old teammates again !!

Sharks Gaffed And Gutted !!

Posted on: July 18th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

After last Saturdays record breaking win against Mornington, Coach Barry was loath to make any changes, but what could he do with favourite son Bundynow available after his 3 week Umpire sponsored holiday…..the son plays !!

Also the Coach was blessed with a cornucopia of new faces ready and available to hit the park, and Chappy, The Grover and Rohan Bleeker, felt the wrath from a 160 point win and were axed to allow the return of  The Great Ulmer and the tenacious and talented Benny Poole.

All icing on the cake for the side to play Bon Beach at the Aquarium…… hit the link !!!

Also Hilites of the week are Dougy and Andy Kiely (after missing last week) running out for their 5oth senior games….Congratulations !!!!!

RECAP

After missing last weeks game due to flue, Dale Cary will now  reach a milestone in his career, when he runs out at the Stonecave to reach a total of 70 reserve games, which together with his 130 Senior XVII games, will total the magic 200 senior game mark and automatically give him entry to the esteemed list of YCW Football Club Life Members.

Dale, a tenacious back pocket, onballer, played his first senior game in 2000 and was a member of the 1999 Under 18, 2001 Reserve and 2003 Senior Premiership sides. One of only 2 players to catch this triple, the other being Craig Nankervis. Also was unlucky to play in the 2000 reserve, and the 2005 and 2007 1st XVIII loosing Grand Final sides…Well done Dale….  the Club salutes You !!…again …

Dogs Euthanized Humanely..They Felt No Pain !!

Coach Barry looked in to his crystal ball for his team setup for Mornington, and decided that it may be  judicious to give those truly great workhorses, Benny Poole and The Great Ulmer a weeks R & R after the last two hard games against Seaford and Karingal…

In their place, the wise one decided to go with Young Maca, who got dropped last week (with the late inclusion of Steve Roberts), and a new face for the senior supporters, in Rohan Bleeker, on loan from the Stingrays, having his first senior game…hit the Link !!

Highlite of next week..James Lee and Andy Kiely play their 50th

Also a major highlite of Saturday’s visit to Bon Beach will be when Danny Lafontaine runs out for his 100th Reserve game to go with his 104 1st XVIII games.

He becomes only the third player to get the magic double in the Clubs history…One of the hardest achievements to obtain in football, the only others to get the double ton are Damien Hardstone, 207 senior, 104 reserve games and Midge Rossetto, with 102 senior and 214 reserve games.

Lafas decision to return to the Club, following his stint as assistant coach at Red Hill in 2005, has certainly paid of as he has not only got the reserves ton, since his return, but the senior ton and life membership for playing 200 senior games as well..A great achievement which everyone in the Club applauds !!

Also reaching a milestone in his career as he runs out at the Aquarium will be Club favorite, in long serving player, Dale Carey who will reach the total of 70 reserve games, which together with his 130 Senior XVII games, will total the magic 200 senior game mark and automatically give him entry to the esteemed list of YCW Football Club Life Members.

Dale, a tenacious back pocket, onballer, played his first senior game in 2000 and was a member of the 1999 Under 18, 2001 Reserve and 2003 Senior Premiership sides. One of only 2 players to catch this triple, the other being Craig Nankervis. Also was unlucky to play in the 2000 reserve, and the 2005 and 2007 1st XVIII loosing Grand Final sides…Well done Dale….  the Club salutes You !!

My humble apologies for missing this Fact !!!! ……    but as an aside to all that, and which I have just now spotted, is the fact that the 160 p0int winning margin against Mornington last Saturday, was actually the highest ever, beating the previous 1992 shellacking of  139 points in that years 26.16.172 to 5.3.33 scoreline.

Also that score of 28.26.194 points becomes the 5th highest 1st Xv11 ever, moving ahead of the 186 points kicked against Langwarrin in 1987.   Well done !!!

Now….`1002 Ways To Loose A Game` or Chelsea Away !!

Posted on: July 8th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

Chelsea in 2010, now even lower down the rung in sole 9th place on 80 % with only 1 win, this time pits itself against YCW in top place, and unbeaten with a 200+ %.

What contest would purport to be more of a fait accompli.. With Dougy having a rest and Macca suffering a bruised calf, the positions were adequately filled, as I suggested, by David Bodley and Under 18 Lachlan Wallace, therefore you would have to say ( even a Chelsea fan)  it was a lay down misere for the Cats !!

Who would have even in their wildest dreams ever have imagined it..Chelsea beats YCW ??   I still don’t believe it happened..but it did….  9.19.73 to 12.11.83. Embarrassing, shattering, a season unbeaten, out the window !!

But life and Footy survive, and the world moves on as they say, and down the track lies Eady/Asp. … hit the link..  now that we realize we are not invincible, we can get on with the job and down to some hard work, in the realization this flag just ain’t gonna be easy.

Stonecats Gored..Pampalona Proves Fatal

Posted on: July 7th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

Coming of that extremely disappointing 1 point loss against Seaford the week before, the boys were raring to go, to make ammends by  reversing the flow, and taking out Karingal at the Bull Pit. Quietly confident,  after beating them in the first round night game at Frankston Park by 23 points in a torrent of rain which continued for the full 100 mins…….hit the link..

Tigers Bite Us..Game Stolen by 1 Point

Posted on: June 27th, 2010 by Rocky No Comments

Tigers bite The Stonecats.. A win that was stolen from under our nose !!

How Did It Happen..Tell Me….Please !!

Saturdays game presented some headaches for Coach Barry with Dylan Hoare out suffering an injury, Captain Bundy Barry starting his 3 week sabbatical, following his visit to the tribunal, and then the late withdrawal of Byron Barry suffering a bad case of harness racing.. Basically, one row of our all conquering backline gone.. pphtt !!  Not a handy outcome when facing our longtime nemesis Seaford.

Delving in to his deep bag of tricks, Bugs decided to go with Young Maca and bring back Andy Keily and Blake`The Snake` McCormack as more than useful replacements to cover the gaps in the backline. With Wintle to fullback , Grover retaining his spot on the HBF and Blake and Andy in the pockets it was a new look defensive unit ..hit the link
