Dylan Hoare wends his way thru the gluepot before handballing over the lake-and its hazards !!
With the weather going to be extremely cold and the welcome Icy at the Aviary, Bugs decided bring back that fireband Maca to help warm things up and light some fires on the forward line. And to facilitate this Bugs elected to give Ben Hackett some much needed R&R before the finals hit us..so with very much our usual side onboard, we hit the Campaign trail to Edithvaleon election day, with a view to voting out the Eagles..
So kicking towards the Frankston end, the boys faced the first centre bounce, in what could only be called a glue pot ….
Derbyshire tried to keep a tite reign on Benny T`s goalkicking, without much success !!
At the first bounce, the ball was won by Ash, and sent goalwards by Steve Roberts, where Lewis ran on to the ball and goaled from close range. The Eagles answered immediately however to level the scores at one goal each. After this little flurry the backs of both sides tightened up with Dylan (9 touches), Byron 8, “the usual suspects” and Blake controlling things at their end, and with the cream rising it wasn’t long before our forwards came back again, with firstly Dylan accepting a pass from Poole at the 10 min mark to run on and goal from in front.
From the centre ball up, Rhys, who was beginning to have influence on the game from the wing, kicked in to the goalsquare where Lewis spilled the mark, but the ever watchful Tellis bored in, andkicked an opportunistic gem of a goal off the ground. He and Lewis were delighted !!!
The Eagles came back seconds later however, when Bowden marked over Wintle and goaled from 50 m, however this was to be the last score of the Q, as the boys went to the short break 4.6.30 to 2.0.12
Benny Tellis takes matters in to his own hands, stopping Beau Turner in his tracks !!
Two mins in to the 2nd Q, Young Maca handballed from the centre to Zannon running past, who got flattened by Derbyshire after he kicked, and the resultant free saw us go 4 goals up, and the start of a Young Maca involved free for all !!
However this fracas seemed to take our minds off the game as the Eagles hit back, and winning some ball out of the centre, and courtesy of one 50m penalty, they put on 3 goals in the next 3min to come back in to the game, 6.6.42 to 5.0. 30. Our boys were beginning to loose the plot and the thoughts of a possible turn up sent the Edithvale crowd in to apoplectic shock/raging hysteria !!
Pooly with 14 touches for the Q, held the game together however, andwe replied via Bods to temporarily stop the flood with a goal at the 10 min mark. However not to be subdued, the Eagles took advantage of a rare spilled mark from Ash Eames, when Edmunds swooped on the ball and kicked goalwards to Dent who toe poked it in !!
That was to be their last however, as from the resultant centre bounce Dylan grabbed the ball and roosted it long to the goals, were Young Maca made the most of an open goal and kicked thru from the goal square.
6 min in Kyle marked in the pocket and kicked goalwards where Bods marked near the point post and converted it with aplomb !!
Maca put the final goal down for the half, when he ran on to a loose ball and goaled from the square, bringing in the boys 10.10.70 to 7.3.45. ….with the Eagles still a chance !!!!
Zannon gets ridden in to the ground by Derbyshire
The third Q, saw the Stonecats take the so called Premiership Q literally, as they burst Edithvales bubble by battering them with continued forward pressure. Benny Tellis showed class in getting 2 goals for the Q, while Bodley, Young Maca, Chappy, Dylan and Zannon each got goals to show the extent of our forward power. The boys went to the Oranges 16.16.112 to 9.6.60 and the game all over !!
“Mega Maca”, Kyle Hutchinson in full flight !!
The last Q started as heavy rain started to fall to add further to the players discomfit, but Kyle felt none of it, as from the centre bounce the ball was forced to him in the pocket, where he picked it up and past back to Lewis, waiting at CHF, who duly marked it and goaled from the 50 m line to bring up the first score for the Q. This was followed up some 5 mins later by a goal from Maca who marked 20 m out and slotted it thru.
It was 9 min in, before Edie were able to push the ball in to their forward 50 and score their first major of the Q. But this was answered immediately, when Poole won the ball from the resultant ball up and kicked deep to the pocket were Tellis marked and past to Maca who gathered up the ball, and toe poked thru a very sneaky goal from the square.
Next to create a score was Young Maca, who picked up a loose ball in the center and kicked deep to the pocket where Lewis dropped a sitter but was able to recover and elude the pack and goal from the point post. With the backs tightening the screws the forwards had a plethora of opportunities to score, as Lewis, Maca and Tellis peppered the goals.
At the 16 min mark Benny Tellis marked 10 m out and missed a sitter and 3min on marked near the point post but decided to play on and was penalised for holding the ball. But from the free kick, the ball was returned, where the ever reliable Bods marked in the pocket, and made no mistake to increase the lead to 62 points.
Three min later, Kyle at CHF handballed to Dylan who kicked long to goal, where Lewis marked on his own near the point post and converted from 10m.
With the siren about to go, Jie kicked deep to the goal square, where Bods in the middle of a pack, was able to bring the ball to the ground and Maca ran in to kick thru another of his sneaky opportunistic goals.
The Siren went, and we finished the H&As, beating Edithvale by 85 points 23.20.158 to 11.9.75 and us minor premiers
In the wet and greasy conditions, the boys had played a very tite and professional game, outclassing cellar dweller Edithvale and winning all over the field.
The backline as always, did not put a foot wrong and kept the Eagles on a very tite leash (unfortunately not tite enough to stay below the magic 1000 points), but good enough to prove themselves the best backline in the competition, having had 360 less points scored against it, than any other team.
Byron with 30 touches, Blake 13, and Zannon were particularly effective up back, while the stars of the show up forward, where Lewis, back on his home turf, with 20 touches and 5 goals, Benny Tellis with 4 goals and 27 touches and Bods with 4 goals.
My best were, midfield inspiration Pooly, with 30 grabs picked up out of the mud, and an inch of sliced eyebrow to boot, Eames who was a tower of strength in the ruck and controlled this engine room all day !!

Its interesting to compare this side with perhaps the greatest ever, to-wit the 1992 Premiership side, which ended the H & As with a win/loss ratio of 17 to 1.
1992 Us 18 17 1 0 0 0 2581 1275 202.43 68
2010 Us 18 15 3 0 0 0 2199 1036 212.26 60
Our current 1st XVIII has a 240 point better backline but the 1992 with Whitfield kicking over 100 goals and some pretty awesome rovers to boot kicked more than 380 points more for the H &As. The % of 212 racked up by the current side is the highest ever by a Stonecat side, and the 2nd highest of any side since 1980 !!
Also on personal statistics, the average weight of our current 1st XVIII is 3 kg greater than the oldies, 2 years older and 3 cm taller….
