Seniors: YCW 14.20-104 def Pines 3.4-22

The last time these sides met the Pines were victorious by the narrowest of margins so it was with some nervousness that we awaited the outcome of the return match on an extremely cold and windy afternoon at Jubilee Park. The Pines were never in the hunt being content to play mainly a defensive game style forcing much of the play to the RSL wing and with “man mountain “ Ash Eames giving our mids Steve Robert, Rhys Johnson and Co, first use of the ball really kept the Python’s on the back foot. Big Lewie “The Fridge” Roberts was unstoppable up forward providing numerous opportunities to small forwards Ricky “Wizz” Morris (6 Goals) and Ben “BT” Tellis (3 Goals), while the Barry cousins were almost impassable across the half back line and well backed up by Dane “The Russian” Andonov and Kev Lylak. Special mention to debutantes Steve O’Donnell and Mitch Hessling who performed admirably which is sure to keep plenty of pressure on at the selection table with several players returning from injury over the coming weeks. Guest Reporter Jimmy Olsen

Reserves YCW 3.9-27 lt Pines 6.11-47

The 2’s turned up hungry and looking to post their first win for the year against a Pines outfit that were also yet to register a win. On a very windy day several players had trouble judging the fall of the ball in the first quarter, the boys only managed 2 points, but some wayward kicking from Pines meant the difference was only 8 points at the first change. The 2nd quarter was more of the same with our backline providing the standout performances, Hallpike, Bleeker, Allen and Hogan all keeping their opponents out of the game. The Stonecats finally got a couple of majors on the board in the 3rd quarter, Ben Buckley seemed to be all over the ground winning possessions and then finishing off in the forward line. We entered the last quarter with a sniff of victory down by 10 points. Unfortunately it was not to be with Pines kicking 2 goals to our 1 in the last and holding on for the win. A few home truths were delivered by Coach Reidy after the game, expect a big lift this week. The boys now travel to Mornington in our last chance to get a win before the break. Guest Reporter JDL

Under 18s: YCW 16.14-110 defeated Pines 0.1-1

The Unders played host to Pines at the Cave and as tradition has it, it no easy feat to beat a YCW team at home. The first 15 minutes was a hard fought game against their opponents with the Unders scoring the first behind and the Pines answering closely after with their 1 and only behind for the game. This does not mean that the Pines were not competitive throughout the game, in the windy and gusty conditions but all credit goes to the Unders backs and mid field players who built and maintain a great defensive wall, which drove back all attacks from their opponents (similar to the Great wall of China which held back a formidable Mongolian army).

The conditions on the day played havoc with keeping to the game plan as most of the play was out on the far side of the ground (the dead wing), which played a part in keeping the coaching staff on their toes.

The rest of the game saw the Unders take control of the game and never look back, from the centre rucks Mark Whitehead, BJ Credlin and Zinzi Mosimane, through the mid field of Ryan Santon, James Bryant ,Michael Debenham and others, to the forwards with straight shooter Kyle St Anne (7) leading the way, James McVicar (3), Kieren Albanese (2) and then 1 each to Ben Todd, Zinzi Mosimane, Jayden Canepa and Ryan Santon who all contributed to a well executed win.

Best on ground was presented to Ryan Santon who played in a multiple positions on the day and taking control of those positions to assist the Unders in what ended up as a comfortable win by the score line. Other award winners were Kyle St Anne, Mark Whitehead, James McVicar and special mentioned to the Callum Steele. Next week, the Unders venture to Mornington to play in a top of the table game. Guest Reporter “Big I’m Excited Kev”

Under 18′s Action

Colts: 6.9-45 lt to Narre Warren 9.9-63

The match against top of the table Narre Warren lived up to expectations with an intense 1st quarter setting the tone for the rest of the game with the team winning more of the ball offset by Narre’s more efficient use of the ball. At the half time break and regardless of being two goals down there was a positive feeling that by continuing to get first use of the ball through Mitch Dessent’s fine game in the ruck that the results would show on the scoreboard. First use of the ball however also depends on clean disposal to a player leading downfield to space and it was in this department that the boys came a little unstuck against a quality opposition that had the ability to pounce on any turnover that presented itself. In the end that was the difference with the team going down 6.9. 45 to 9.9 63 with a couple of reasonably easy goals coming in the last quarter.

Coach Jones had no real concerns with the result as the endeavour by all players was obvious and the team structure held firm – it was the delivery of the ball under greater pressure that needs continued development. Players to play a steady 4 quarters were Todd Cracknell, the aforementioned Dessent, Jem Thorne, Josh DiGregorio, Todd Lithgow and special mention to young 16 yo Scotty on a promising debut. Guest Reporter “JK”

A Grade YCW 29 def Pines 28, B Grade YCW 11 lt Pines 57

Round 4 saw the Stone kittens take on our old adversaries Pines down at Jubilee Park. This was the first time the two netball sides had met but the rivalry had most certainly been passed on through the footballers. With the wind blowing a gale the girls had to adjust their game and it was a tough task for the goalers to get the ball through the ring. The B team is improving out of sight and beginning to combine together extremely well. Gabby shone in defence, taking Megzi’s direction on board, putting in 110%, coming up well on top of her opponent and taking out the auction player for round 4. Emma was once again strong in defence with several intercepts and deflections and Kirsten ran hard though thru the centre always presenting as an option when needed.

After trailing behind at the final change the A team gave it their all and came away with a very impressive one goal win! The defensive pressure all the way from the attacking end right through to the defenders was fantastic and forced many turnovers. The Barry sisters were certainly a force to be reckoned with. Lyshae and those “go go gadget” arms were in fine form once again turning the ball over on numerous occasions with another auction player under her belt. Maxine also starred down in defence, with her never give up attitude stopping any ball that came her way especially in the dying seconds when it was needed most. Pink ribbon round saw us raise almost $600 with the raffle of a gorgeous pink hamper and all donations from the girls pink sweat bands going to BCNA.

Next week we meet the other newcomers to the league Mornington in what should be another great round of Netball. Good Luck to all teams. GO STONEKITTENS!

The week leading up to and including Sunday 20th May is designated as Junior Week. During this week senior players will support one junior team at training and on game day to assist teaching basic skills to our emerging players and supporting their football endeavours. The senior players will be attending their matches and joining in afterwards for the awards and match reports. This is a program that all junior players look forward to and they learn a lot from the senior players during this time. The benefit to the club is that the junior players and their parents become engaged by the seniors and are more inclined to come down and watch the seniors play. Attendance and support by the juniors has certainly increased over the past three years and the players notice and appreciate the juniors watching them on game day.

Seniors: Frankston YCW 15.16-106 def Chelsea 3.10-28
It is a well known fact that the last time it didn’t rain during a Stonecats match at Chelsea was April 1976. Despite the expected rain the Stoners played some great team football to come out on top by 78 points.

All starting from the first bounce when big Eamer took control of the ruck in the first quarter, whether it was in hit outs, marks or just general play around the ground. The entire team took his lead and played a much more desperate and disciplined brand of football than the opposition. The discipline was particularly evident in the fact that on nearly every occasion the Stoners had more numbers around the ball and were able to use this advantage to move into attack from what was initially a defensive position. On occasions the moving of the ball from player to player was so slick that the umpires couldn’t believe it themselves and thus concluded that the only possibility could be that the Stoners must be throwing the ball from player to player. (Slow motion replays might need to be considered in the future for the slower thinking amongst us).

In any case the backline’s relentless pressure and run was well rewarded with Chelsea only managing 3 goals for the match – having averaged 18 goals per game to date. Lachie Wallace was a welcome inclusion on the wing and one particular piece of play in which he had 3 possessions and a great shepherd resulted in a goal that would be worthy of any highlight reel. The new brigade of Smith, Andonov, Morris and Mazurek (Jack’s first game) has added to an already impressive line-up, not just by way of their own individual abilities but the way they have adjusted to the Stoners style of non-stop determined team play. Ash Eames took out the Auction Player award for Rd. 3.

It was ALSO great to see a good number of supporters braving the conditions; Chelsea’s newly built grandstand and club rooms helping to ease the effects of the weather.

Finally on a more important note – Hamburger score - 8 out of 10. The Chelsea Football Club has always been a good hamburger hunting ground for this particular scribe and did not let me down on this occasion. I am looking forward however to getting back to “We Need a Sponsor Hill” next week where the burgers are in a class of their own. Perhaps I might have 2. Guest Reporter: “Hungry Jack”

Reserves: Chelsea 9.12-66 def YCW 5.6-66

The 2’s side travelled to Chelsea for the traditionally wet battle against the Seagulls. An early injury to Dean Swallow put the boys down a man from the start. The first quarter was a tough affair with a couple of the young boys stepping up to the challenge. A few interesting umpiring decisions helped Chelsea skip to a 3 goal lead at the first change. YCW’s only score for the quarter was Stricko sneaking forward to mark and kick truly. The 2nd and 3rd quarters became a dire contest with each side trying to get the ball forward at any cost. Hard work by Jesse Savage, Ben Buckley, and the entire backline kept the boys in it. The Stonecats entered the last quarter down by 4 goals but not out of the contest. The boys had their opportunities in the last, but were unable to finish off, and despite having more of the ball for the quarter couldn’t close the gap. But it was a promising showing from the boys, with Rhen Hallpike, Yiann Marandos and Chris Gonzalez both having their best games of their short senior career and a few old stagers getting back to their best with none better than Jesse Savage who took out Auction Player award for Rd. 3.

Pines is the challenge for next week and with both sides yet to win a game for 2012 it shapes as a great opportunity to register our first win and get back on track. Guest Reporter: “Mr. Tall”

Under 18′s: YCW 6.12-48 def Chelsea 5.7 37

The unders ventured to Chelsea and fought hard in wet and slippery conditions to overcome Chelsea by 11 points. Although, the score does not reflect the guy’s tenacity and courage at the ball and throughout, they had most of the control over the game. Coach Byron Barry couldn’t have been more pleased with them as they kept to the structure and game plan throughout the game. However, with only 2 games under their belt, there are still roads for continued improvement and development which the guys are doing every time they take to the ground. Steve O’Donnell was awarded best on ground and deserved the accolade and acknowledgement from the team for his controlling efforts and drive between the back line and on ball positions. Other top performances to be noted and are second to none, was BJ Credlin kicking 3 goals, Charlie Patterson and Zinzi Mosiame for their running efforts and working hard for their team mates, and special mentioned to Alex Harnett (2 goals) and Daniel Heijden for their drive through the centre and off the back line respectfully. This does not take away the sterling efforts from the other 18 guys on the team, who all put in their heart and soul to help the team get their win. Guest Reporter “Big I’m excited Kev”

Colts: YCW 23.22-160 def Somerville 2.2-14

The Colts played Somerville and immediately stamped their authority on the game from the first bounce with a tough attack on the ball from all lines to post 8 goals to one by the first break. Despite an honest effort by the Eagles to play man on man around the ground, the physical brand of football played by the boys backed up by some excellent close in handball completely dismantled their opponents resulting in a 20 goal win.

Coach Phil Jones was especially pleased with the team’s discipline in maintaining its structure right through to the end of the game. Hard to pick better players in a great team effort but Mark Whitehead’s complete domination in the ruck, Rob Evans with 7 clever goals, Jake Theobold and Kyle St Anne with 4 goals apiece, Toby Broerson, Michael Debenham and Anthony Stillatano and Jacob “Kelly” Cheverley were notable.

Goal Kickers: R. Evans 7, J. Theobald 4, K. St Anne 4, M. Debenham 2, B. Lee 2, J. Alves 2, J. De Gregorio , T. Lithgow

Netball

A Grade YCW 30 lt Chelsea 40

B Grade YCW 21 lt Chelsea 39

Round two turned out to be a very wet and soggy one and most certainly not ideal conditions for the netball court. Nonetheless the battles were still fought hard down at the Chelsea sportswomans centre. The B team started off strong with Noo and Carlee combining well in the goal circle. Lozza Barry played an absolute ripper, deflecting and intercepting every ball in sight, a very well deserved best on court. Unfortunately Chelsea were’ the better team on the day and came away with the four points. The weather made a slight improvement for the A grade girls but it was still wet, soggy and very slippery. It was very much a game of possession netball , and at the end of the day unforced errors and unproductive turnovers cost us the win and the four points on the board. The girls fought hard all game with Cat Meagher consistently running in the centre, Darci’s high accuracy in the ring and Lee changing it up, pulling the bib on in defence and doing a stellar job. Congratulations and good luck to Courtney, Lauren, Lyshae and Cat who have been nominated to try out for the interleague squad. It is pink ribbon round this week with the Stonekittens taking on Pines at home. It would be great to see all of our supporters down at the courts and of course back at the club rooms afterwards with a gold coin donation to help raise some money and awareness for such a fantastic cause. Guest Reporter “Kool Cat”

Auction Players winners were:- B Team Lozza Barry, A Team Cat Meagher

GO STONEKITTENS!

Go Stoners

All in all not a bad effort from the girls in round 2 but not enough to get us the points at the end of the day with both teams going down to the strong Karingal girls. Really good to see the ANZAC day rivalry between YCW and Karingal doesn’t stop with the footy boys.

In the A’s it was a tough, physical battle from the first whistle with both teams suffering a couple of knocks and blows with our own Sammie McIntyre injuring her knee. The defence were nearly unstoppable, Lyshae Barry and Courtney Janssens really putting the pressure on keeping us to nearly level at half time. Unfortunately fatigue hit in about then and Karingal’s height really hurt us, but it’s great to know we have room for improvement.

The B team put up a hard effort all game through, including some spectacular intercepts from our best on Lauren Barry. No matter the score the girls played a skilful consistent game.

On a brighter note the Player Auction Night went off with a blast with some big money being thrown around (obviously due to the girl’s involvement this year!) and a great night was had by all.

This week Chelsea at Chelsea so good luck girls and GO STONEKITTENS!

Message from the President

Firstly, I would like to say how proud I was of the YCW football club on Saturday. The work put in by the committee and volunteers into making the ANZAC day game a great success was brilliant and I thank you all. See you all at Chelsea next week.
Cheers, Neil Reddaway

Results from Rd. 2

Seniors: YCW 7.9 (51) def Karingal 6.9 (45)

As I strolled down Hillcrest Road there was no more joyous sight than a sunbathed Jubilee Park in scintillating condition. As the bounce of the ball drew closer, the much anticipated pre-match ANZAC service stirred emotions. The Ode was recited, the Last Post sounded on the bugle and the roulettes roared overhead to remind us of the many soldiers killed or hurt during wars. Following this two premiership flags were proudly unfurled in front of a huge crowd. The scene was set for a great day.

In what was an electric atmosphere, the YC boys commenced proceedings well with two early goals. The midfield was providing plenty of opportunities through the likes of Rhys Johnson and the laconic Craig Nankervis and Michael ‘Go Go Gadget Arms’ Chaplin provided a real focal point in attack. The backline led by Dane ‘The Russian Tactical Response Jet’ Andonov combined beautifully in repelling many Karingal attacks and held them to their first goalless quarter for the year. The highlight of the quarter was when Daniel Smith chased and ran down a Karingal opponent as they were about to foray forward. This was one of a few chase-downs from the bloke we remember not only as a great young player of the last decade but also as the one who sported a mo-hawk in the 2003 premiership side. It was great to see Smithy back in the Stonecat gear.

The second quarter saw the match even out into a battle between the two half back lines. The strong westerly breeze meant that the match was largely played on the outer wing. It was a game of attrition with plenty of ferocity shown by both teams around the footy. In a low scoring affair, it was an important quarter for the Stonecats who tipped in two goals to Karingal’s one to take a 21 point lead into half time.

Rocky Hardstone’s oranges, snakes and cordial must have hit the spot because the boys were hungry in the third, again outscoring Karingal by 3 points for the quarter. El Capitano Bundy Barry relishes the contest against Karingal and was at his superb best across half back. The good sign for the Stonecats was that he had plenty of mates sharing the load. Blake ‘The Garden Rake’ McCormack swept up the loose ball across half back and combined beautifully with the likes of Dale Carrol, Cogho and Paul Wintle to drive the ball forward on numerous occasions.

With a four goal lead to take into the last quarter, the supporters on “Sponsor Required Hill” were confident that the boys were well on the way to victory, but the celebrations were put on ice as Karingal fought hard and with some smart play were able to draw within a few points with plenty of time remaining. The Stonecats held their nerve in the final few minutes with some smart ball use around the defensive side of the ground and some match saving marks from the man mountain Ash Eames. In a true team performance, Rhys Johnson was deservedly awarded the best on ground ANZAC medal for his tireless efforts over four quarters. (Guest Reporter – Clarke Kent)

Reserves: Karingal 15.6 (96) def YCW 3.7 (25)

The reserves appeared to come out the barriers running backwards on the weekend. Karingal were more dominant across the ground in the first half, able to link up possessions and move more freely than our boys. As Reidy stated at half time we had only played a total of 5 good minutes of footy before the long break. Not having troubled the scoreboard there was a rather large challenge ahead needing to make up 10 goals. However, kudos to the stonecats who came back out clearly switched on. There were good signs all across the ground, with the usual suspects getting plenty of the footy – Mr tough man Shane Blick, big Josh Leary moving the ball through the middle, the razzle dazzle of Jonno Crouch, dancing with the stars Brad Grove, Mr Dim Sim himself showing that he is Hungry thirtsy, and comeback kid Jesse Savage all putting in stellar efforts. More promising though were some of the newer faces to the team showing their tricks. With the likes of Scott Elliot, Ant Totaro, Andrew Henry and Rohan Bleeker all showing their goods it’s definitely going to be an exciting year ahead. Unfortunately the end result was a 12 goal defeat made more sour by a probable 2 weeks off for Josh Leary who received a Karingal head butt to his knee, but importantly the boys stuck together after the game and will be ready for next week’s clash with Chelsea. Also circulating the rooms was the increased whisperings of a Z Daff comeback. Are they more than just rumours?

(Guest Reporter – Dwarf from the North)

Colts: YCW 9:13 (67) def Karingal 8.3 (51)

It was a case of deja-vu for the team as they played Karingal for the second time in as many weeks and like the first match the boys were caught napping as the skilful Karingal side switched on right from the start and pulled away to a 4 goal lead at the first break. The second quarter was much the same as the Bulls kept the pressure on with accurate kicking to players willing to lead to space –putting the backline under great pressure. It seemed as if the team were waiting to see what their opponents were doing before responding – with consistent turnovers not helping the situation.

A blast from Coach Jones revved the team into 4th gear by the halfway mark of the 3rd Q and the impressive handball count (James Bryant 3 hballs in 15 sec a highlight) from there on in wore down the opposition for a hard fought win by 7 points. A credit to the guys to play to their potential for the 2nd half with every member of the team involved after a lead footed start.

Consistent 4Q by Michael Debenham on the wing and Mark Whitehead in the ruck and around the ground. Special mentions to Jake Theobold, Toby Broerson, James Bryant, Corey Micari, James McVicar and Jordy Alves. (Guest Reporter – JK)

Under 18s, had a bye with Karingal only fielding a Colts team this season.

What a fantastic night this was with lots of interest and good support by the punters. Great to see the netball girls out in force which helped to make it one of the best auction player nights seen at Jubilee Park for many years. Thanks to all the players and supporters who were successful in buying a player group and a special vote of thanks to Josh Kendall guest auctioneer as well as Daniel Strickland, Josh Leary Catherine Meagher for putting the form guide together. See Dave to collect weekly prizes.

Saturday 28th April 7:00pm

Welcome to the 2012 season, and after last year’s great success it’s shaping up to be another big year. 2012 sees the addition of our very own netball club. A massive effort over the summer from Ev Barry, Cat Strickland (nee Meagher) and Max Barry to get the girls together, trained up and looking in great shape for the season ahead. Well done ladies.

So this year’s auction features the ladies as well. I’m tipping the round 1 netball game vs Langy and training next week could be attended by a few scouts just to check out the early season form. So happy punting and see you all after the Round 2 game vs Karingal. The Auction starts at 7:00pm.

· The entire senior football and netball playing list is divided up into 14 syndicate groups, with anybody being able to bid for a group.

· Syndicates may be formed to purchase player groups.

· Ownership of the player group will go to the highest bidder.

· After every game the Player Auction selection panel will nominate the best on ground/court player (BOG/BOC) for the Reserves and Seniors Football & Netball Teams. The Player Auction selection panel will consist of the match committees from both the football and netball teams.

· The owner of the BOG/BOC players will receive payment following the completion of each round.

· The estimated prize pool is expected to allow a minimum payment of $30 Stonecat Vouchers X 4 to be made to the person(s) who own the best on ground player in all grades in rounds 1 to 18.

· The final cash prize of $1,500 is paid out to the syndicate whose player group polls the highest aggregate votes in the club best & fairest results.

Payment

· Payment must be made on the night to Treasurer Paul Busuttil – VISA AND MASTERCARD FACILITIES WILL BE AVAILABLE. CHEQUES WILL ALSO BE ACCEPTED.

· Weekly pay-outs to the successful owner(s) will only be made if the owner(s) have paid for their player groups in full.

· No compensation is considered if your players are injured, unavailable or just can’t get a kick or sink one in the net.

Form Guide

Group 1

Dane Andonov
Jack Mazurek
Josh Leary
Anthony Totaro
James Sweetman
Lauren Goldie (Auction Player Rd. 1)
Vanessa Barry

A few new boys to get things started (and a couple of returning old ones). The new boys have impressed in the trials and will be looking to make an impression early at a new club. Sweetman looks set to lock down the full-back spot in the seconds and push for senior selection. Leary completed the preseason as only he knows how:minding his girlfriend’s two dogs…at least he’s had 2 more training sessions than he’d had last year before his first game. If his goal kicking improves the tall lanky bloke will poll well.

Lauren looks like the gun goaler of the new Stonekittens, our star country recruit. She is young, fit, fast and accurate. Ness another one of full forward girls with some sass about her, she has Barry blood so clearly will get some votes.

Group 2

Craig Nankervis
Dale Carroll
Jacob Busuttil
Dylan Neely
Jesse Coghlan
Leanne Kitson
Rachael Jackson

Consistent vote-getting is what group 2 is all about. Nackers, DC and Cogo are all regular features in the best players list come Sunday morning. Expect stiff competition from bidders here. The U18 boys have been flying in the practice games and will provide the icing on the cake here. Lee has a wealth of experience on her side and her return to the netty court is set to be more exciting than her younger brother Stricko kicking a goal. RAYJAY is the better half of SXYBYZ, with more enthusiasm, get up and go than Byzmeans she will be sure to the attract voters.

Group 3

Steve Roberts
Michael Chaplin
Yiann Marandos
Dean Swallow
Glen Smith
Catherine Meagher
Kristen Wylie

The smooth moving Stevie Roberts will be looking to recapture the form that took him to the league MVP in 2010 after a down year (only by his standards) in 2011… Look for him to challenge for the club B&F this year. Quick off the mark, strong overhead and dead-eye straight are all qualities you need in a full forward… Chappy will be hoping Bods doesn’t steal too many goals from him in last quarters so he can knock Kraska off for the league leading goal kicker. After captaining the U18 side last yearYiann steps up to the big league and if his practice game form is anything to go by this kid will have no worries adjusting. Deano returns after a few years in the wilderness, but he’s shown that he’s lost nothing in his time out of the game. Smithy is a silky skilled midfielder who’s damaging every time he has the ball. Cat has been an important link in getting the Stonekittens up and scooting along. She can only catch one handed because of the massive rock Stricko just gave her. Kristen by far the best Wylie, don’t judge her by her brother’s performances at club on her shoulders she will be a gun in the backline.

Group 4

Lew Roberts
Kevin Lylak
Jie Coghlan (Auction Player Rd. 1)
Jono Crouch
Shane Blick
Vanessa Ker
Kate Howard

The Two Story House and the Man-Child head up Group 4. I suppose a BOG performance in the GF against Karingal doesn’t matter when the best thing you do all day is flatten Bev Molloy, but Lew is back and ready to dish out punishment to opposition backlines. Kev Lylak is ready to fill the vacant #14 jumper and is a vital cog in the YCW backline he’ll be getting all the big jobs this year. Jie Barry has set himself for another big year and can be relied upon for a few of BOGs. Crouchy is looking in fine touch fitting into the senior midfield for the practice games and he’ll be keen to hold his spot. Blicky is back as tough as ever and will be the general of a young two’s backline. Vanessa, better known as Mrs BT is the fittest on court thanks to her private PT sessions, a goaler set to sink a few throughout the season. Kate is playing in her debut netball season and has shown some impressive moves thus far, watch out for the most improved here.

Group 5

Ben Tellis
Ricky Morris
Brad Grove (Auction Player Rd. 1)
Matt Millman
Andrew Henry
Lyshae Barry
Darcie McKenzie

BT has finally lived a dream as being the oldest bloke on the list. His grey hairs are showing through but he is still running around like a 20 year old. Ricky is a boom recruit that has quality written all over him. Should steal some goals and votes off BT. Grova is back from his Mrs’ Horse riding events and looks ready to unleash that booming left foot. Thrillman, what can I say, a summer of swiss multi-vitamins, determination and shear passion has this young bloke firing on all cylinders. Henry is back playing with his mates and Reids has already developed a little crush. Lyshae the quietest of the Barry clan….. Defends far better than her brother Bundy with those go-go gadget limbs and Darcie has been shooting the lights out at training most nights.

Group 6

Brad Ulms
Mitch Hessling
Dylan Hoare
Chris Stott
Clayton Watt
Astrid Cauchy
Kirsten Doherty

Ulma is bigger, stronger and smarter. How you ask? This man is determined to be the best power forward in the comp. Hesso has already showed plenty of guts, courage and sheer determination that made him the loveable bloke he is. Likened to Stricko look for him to stand and deliver this year. Dirty has been loaded up on calcium and is back on track. Shattered at the fact he missed last year’s GF the Gecko will be kicking goals later in the year. Stotty and Clay are back. Stotty has recovered after his shark attack and Clay ready to rebounding after his knee reco. Astrid a new young gun looking set to cement her spot in the centre court with her peppiness and enthusiasm. Kirsten a smooth centre court player hailing from the bush and with pace like Lachie Wallace will be another one to watch.

Group 7

Anthony Barry
Ryley Hodson
Blake McCormack
Jesse Savage
Brendan Wheeler
Gabby Tellis
Courtney Janssens

Votes galore here… both the reigning Seniors and Reserves B&F winners. The skipper will be ready to go from the moment he side steps his way through the huddle in Round 1. Ryley will be looking to build on his stellar year as the love child of Reids and claim a spot in the Barry bed. The “smartest kid at the club” Jesse Savage is a proven big game player, expect big things after his GF heroics last year. The Snake is back to full fitness and is going to be a big part of the 3-peat attempt this year. Brendan returns to the club this year to give some much needed grunt to the midfield.Court, AKA Mrs Bundy, has already been touted as the early B and F favourite and considering she is connected to a Barry and a Barry is coaching put some money on her. Gab the best Tellis at the club; she passes, assists and encourages all of her teammates, traits her brother Ben is certainly lacking.

Group 8

Byron Barry

Chris Barker

Rhen Hallpike

Michael Blick

Scott Elliott

Emma Foxcroft (Auction Player Rd. 1)

Karlee Janssens

Captain Jack Sparrow has taken the future of YCW under his wing this year and after putting them through their paces in a tough preseason, he’ll be out to show them he moves alright on the field too. Barks lead the league in goalkicking last year and has a permanent hold on the full forward spot. Coach Reids has said the only thing that will move him out of the square is if Reids has to pull the boots on himself… Rhenhas impressed a few people with his preseason form and Mick Blickis set to put the fear of God into opposition backlines for another year. Emma, another Barry bunch add-on hails from the other side of the city,is a good consistent player with a lot of enthusiasm. Karlee’s put in a solid preseason which is always good footing for votes, one of the forwards after the Coleman medal.

Group 9

Rhys Johnson

Daniel Strickland

Kyle Hutchison

Tommy Allen

Chris Hogan

Maxine Barry

This group has it all… silky skills, hard ball gets, tall marking option, tough as nails backman, a talented young lady and someone with a big dim sim chest… We’ll let you figure it out (no Stricko isn’t the talented young lady). Rhys showed what he’s capable of in the final series last year and consistent efforts like that will be sure to attract votes. Hutchy went from strength to strength last year and will be figuring up the pointy end of the B&F count this year. Big Tommy returns after an injury interrupted year and is set to become the general of the 2’s backline (as long as Crash keeps kicking goals up forward) and once he’s back to full fitness will be putting all sorts of pressure on the senior side. Hoges has had an early season injury, but will be back in full flight in no time. Stricko’s had a solid preseason of consolidating his spot in the Meagher stable, eating dim sims, golf, losing his best mates money and fishing on his dad’s new boat. Max the other cog in wheel of the construction of the Stonekittens. Like all Barry’s she won’t let too many goals get past those long arms and with that Barry blood is a certainty for votes.

Group 10

Paul Wintle

Marcus Roberts

Adrian McIntyre

Jake Millman

Sean Rooth

Jacqueline Coy

Susan Weidner

After having to reintroduce myself to Pauly Wintle at my first training session this year after he’d lost the “Castaway” look. It’s OK the super calm under pressure full back of the year is still there even without the mane. Macca is back for the 3peat attempt, look for plenty of roving goals. Robbo is looking for an injury free year after being one of the 2’s most valuable player despite missing half the season due to various injuries. Jake “the wide receiver” Millman has had a summer flirt with the American game and is bringing the catching practice back to the footy field. Roothy has taken inspiration from a classic song released last year by The Beards (check out “You should consider having sex with a bearded man” on You Tube) Hope it translates to good form on the ground as well as off it. Jacqui has had a little set back with injury but that won’t stop her pushing those goals through, a versatile player moving into the mid court as well. Sus can actually run unlike her fiancée Barks, she is set to dominate the mid court.

Group 11

David Bodley

Trent Cowled

Rohan Bleeker

Daniel Waddell

Chris Gonzalez

Stephanie Coy

Bods the last quarter specialist is expected to run into Constable Cowled at some at some stage let’s hope it’s at the footy club not outside it. Constable Crash is firing on both cylinders and with his bullet proof attitude look out for a new man. Ducky has put his hand up for another comeback and will not disappoint. Bleeks is ready to play some regular good footy and the Gonz has been known to kick a bag of goals. Court, AKA Mrs Bundy, has already been touted as the early B and F favourite and considering she is connected to a Barry and a Barry is coaching put money on her.Steph has come to the club with her sister Jacqui and will play an important part in the forward line, a versatile player who can turn the tables and slot down in the backline if need be.

Group 12

Ash Eames

Daniel Smith

Ben Buckley

Sean Hegarty

Lauren Barry

Sam McIntyre

The BFG and his 3 dwarfs, Ash (don’t get his name wrong) Eames was robbed of a senior best and fairest last year. Clearly not in Bugsy’s bed because he so big he has started his own. Except Smithy to have it down his throat most of the year thanks to Ash, back to his home club with his Mum keeping a very close eye on him. He has a point to prove. Bucks starred in the reserves last year and expect to see running out in the late game throughout the year. Sean Hegarty, who’s that I hear people asking? Yes we haven’t seen him all pre-season, yes he went missing in another grand final but I’ve never seen the guy happier. Engaged and two pussy cats he has really set himself up outside footy let’s hope we actually see him at footy soon. Lozza a wonderful winger will be one to watch, she’s ready to dominate both on the court and in the social club… Cousin Sam’s looking forward to pulling the bib back on. Quick and fiery and unlike her brother macca should poll some votes.

Group 13 “THE POTENTIAL”

Our Under 18’s

Our Stingray Boys

Our Frankston Dolphin Lads

Think of the names…..Westerman, Rolfe, McGenniss, Micari, Smrdel, Wallace, Roberton.

Group 14 “DESPERATE TIMES”

Ben ‘Mr International’ Poole

Neil ‘Red Rocket’ Reddaway

Steve ‘Tyabb Legend’ Reidy

Sam ‘He is Not my Dad’ Reddaway

Zannon ‘I Like Cold Beer’ Daff

Steve “Timber!!!” Meagher

Josh “YUK” Exner

Brendan “Josh Gibson” Meagher

Ben ‘Under the Thumb’ Hackett

Daniel ‘No Hamstrings’ Anderson

Evelyn ‘The EvDog’ Barry

Megan ‘Meagzi’ McIntrye

Gabby ‘Byza’s Mum’ Barry

Julie Anne ‘Saint Jules’ Meagher

Amanda ‘Mum of Dyl’ Roberton

And The Rest

The remainder, the leftovers, the slops, whatever you like to call them! Here’s your opportunity for a real bargain! As we have seen in past years ‘the walk-ins’, ‘the returns’ and those coming out of retirement do stand-up! This list includes anyone not listed in any of the groups above that may play a game or more in season 2012! Good Punting Folks!

The Stonecat seniors opened their account with an excellent win at Lloyd Park in the inaugural Bendigo Bank Challenge Cup against Langwarrin. Langwarrin fielded a young team after a number of well documented departures after last season. Their team was missing their captain coach, Paul Wheatley, who was said to be recovering from calf injury. Their inexperience on the field was compounded by Jonathon Hay breaking down in the second quarter with what appeared to be a calf injury. The Stonecats dominated the first two and a half quarters kicking 21 goals and restricting Langwarrin to just 3 goals but to Lang’s credit they did win the last quarter outscoring us 6 goals to 3. The auction player was Jie Coghlan who was outstanding all day. Would have been a difficult choice with Ben Tellis back to his best kicking 6 goals and the “Big Rig” Brad Ulms marking everything that came near and finishing with 4 goals. Other notable players included Ash Eames who again dominated the ruckwork, the laconic Craig Nankervis who is getting better with age, and the weird looking Byron Barry who had earlier enjoyed coached his first Under 18 victory.

There were 5 changes from last year’s Premiership team. Out was Zannon Daff retired, David Bodley (injured), Lachie Wallace – Collingwood VFL, Tony Lester (Pearcedale), Adam Smrdel (Frankston VFL). In was Ricky Morris – ex StAlbans, Frankston VFL, Pearcedale, Dane Andonov – ex Mulgrave, Daniel Smith – a welcome return after stints at Port Douglas and Red Hill, Blake McCormack & Ryley Hodson both promoted from last year’s Reserves premiership team.

In other news the Club congratulates Billy Rolfe and Tim McGennis on being selected to compete in the “try outs” for the TAC Vic Country squad.

Reserves went down Langwarrin by 6 goals

On Saturday a new group of players come together for the first time (14 changes from last year’s premiership team) against a strong Langwarrin team in the Reserves. The twos started the game well and dominated their opposition in the first quarter, but unfortunately the boys were unable to convert early scoring opportunities and cause score board pressure on Langwarrin.

The game then become an arm wrestle for the second and third quarters and the team was in a winning position going into the last after showing good fight and character. Unfortunately our boys missed a couple of early opportunities in the last quarter and Langwarrin were able to create confidence and run the game out. Better players for the day included Grove (Auction Player), skipper Hessling, Leary and Roberts. Totaro in his first game for the club and Hallpike in his return game also impressed with solid games.

Under 18’s defeated Langwarrin 10.16 76 to 5.7 37

The unders had a hard fought win over Langy, and it was only in the final quarter that the boy’s finally got on top running out winners by 6 goals. Debut coach Byron Barry was pretty pleased with their first up efforts but is looking for continued improvement and development as they adapt to a new game plan. Mitch Barker was probably best on ground with some courageous play and great run out of defence. Other top performances came from Ryan Santon kicking two goals and setting up others with some excellent foot skills. Kieran Albanese showed plenty of dash on his wing, “BJ” Credlin looked the goods up forward while onballers Alex Hartnett and Zinzie Mosimane never stopped running and working hard for their team mates.

Colts defeated Karingal

The Colts played their first game of the season against Karingal in perfect football conditions but on a slippery surface against a spirited and skilful opposition who showed the way in the first quarter with cleaner hands and an ability to win the ball around the stoppages and to create 3x times more inside 50’s to place great pressure on our backline scoring 1.5 .11 to Nil. The 2Q saw a fightback with the boys increasing their talk and use of first thought disposals to be down by one point at the main break. Coach Jones stressed that the team was playing to the plan but needed to take more care with disposals and from there the momentum continued after the break as quick handballs and the talk to teammates under pressure was continued with the Colts ending up winning by 5 goals. Solid team effort with special mention to Ben Todd for the full 4Q, Rob Evans 3goals 4pts with one shoulder, Damon Moody , James McVicar, Josh Jones, Jordy Alves and the rest of the backline.

Best on Ground (Auction Players)

Footy: Jie Coghlan (Seniors),Brad Grove (Reserves)

Netty: Lauren Goldie (Seniors) Emma Foxcroft (Reserves)

The StoneCat Senior and Under 18 squads travelled to Geelong on Saturday to play South Barwon in our first practice match for the 2012 season.

With construction work at the ground the boys were without water and the power supply intermittent but the ground was sensational. Many thanks to South Barwon for organising the venue and for what turned out to be a great hit out for both clubs.

The format for the day was 6 quarters for the senior group at Simmonds Stadium at 12.30pm and 6 quarters for the under 18’s at South Barwon’s home ground starting at 3pm.

Although just a practice match some thought went into deciding which end to kick to in the first quarter of the senior game. Matt Millman was the designated Captain for the start of game making a “Lazarus” type recovery after being involved in a nasty car accident earlier in the week. After winning the toss he decided to kick towards the construction site into a gentle breeze. This decision ensured that the 1st XVIII players had the benefit of the breeze for two of their three quarter game.

Despite the unavailability of Daniel Strickland, the 2nd XVIII boys bolstered by a number of under18 players acquitted themselves nicely against a very good South Barwon outfit. The final scores for this game probably did not reflect the eveness of the contest. On the scoreboard, South Barwon won this game comfortably.

It should be noted that Stricko was prevented from playing due to his engagement party that evening. I hope the wedding is planned for well outside the footy season. Congratulations Catherine and Daniel.

The 1st XVIII game resulted in a 6 goal win for the Stonecats in what was a remarkably high quality game.

Missing from last years premiership team were Lew Roberts(unavailable), Zannon Daff(retired), Tony Lester(Pearcedale), Josh Westerman(Stingrays), Adam Smrdel(Frankston VFL) & Lachlan Wallace(Collingwood VFL).’

New players to be given an opportunity this game were Ricky Morris(StAlbans, Pearcedale and Frankston VFL), Daniel Smith(returning to the Club after stints at Port Douglas and Red Hill), Jack Mazurek(Upper Ferntree Gully and Knox), Jem Thorne and Steve O’Donnell(both under 18’s)

Obviously it is very early days in our quest for success this year, but an impressive first up effort by the seniors.

The unders came up against a very strong team and were being soundly beaten early but their improvement as the game went on was notable. The boys played to a plan and showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in both the 18’s and colts competition this year.

Great effort by all concerned to get all of the players out there on time for both games.

NEXT WEEK – NOBLE PARK – SAT 31/3/2012

On Saturday the 31st of March, we travel to Noble Park to take on the Eastern Football League reigning premiers with the Under 18’s kicking off at 10am.

Our Colts will be heading to Dromana to play their Under 18’s commencing at 9.30am.

Supporters required for all games!

COMING UP

Thursday nights kick off on the 5th of April – bar opens 5pm, meals available

Final Practice Match at HOME – Saturday 14th April v. Croydon.

Rnd 1 v. Langwarrin away

Kel and Tim in happier times !!

It is our very sad duty to break the news that one of YCW’s true gentlemen, Kel McCormick died peacefully on Monday 20th Feb. Kel joined YCW back in 1983 when his son Tim debuted in the senior team. He joined the committee in 1989, won the best clubman award in 1994 and was awarded life membership in 1997.

He has served the footy club on the committee basically every year from 1989 up until this year. He was very passionate about his footy and in particular our club and was always the one to ask the hard questions at committee meetings.

His opinion on all club matters was sound and very much valued. Always ready to voice his opinions on team selections he disagreed with, he was an astute judge of all things football and he will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have the good fortune to know him or be called his friend …RIP.

Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Dorothy and the McCormick family. Please check the Herald Sun on Wednesday for the funeral notice..
