5th July Stonecats v The Bulls At The Ranch ..Weather continuing Inclement
Smrdel and Hutchinson hunt down the ball in the 1st Q of the contest..
Coming of that extremely disappointing 1 point loss against Seaford the week before the boys were raring to go to make ammends by reversing the flow and taking out Karingal at the Bull Pit. Quietly confident of taking out the Bulls after beating them in the first round night game at Frankston Park by 23 points in a torrent of rain which continued for the full 100 mins.
Bugs again looked deep in to his crystal ball to come up with a side capable of taking on Karingal with their inclusion of ex Adelaide AFL star Brendan Lade coming in off a bag of 6 goals against Langwarrin. The ball said to leave the side that got pipped by 1 pt as was, except that gun rover Steve Roberts was able to again take his place in the Team after his MCL injury at the expense of young Maca. Bugs decided to counter the size and strength of Lade by putting Andy Keily, with his spring and speed on to the Karingal giant..
In damp conditions after heavy rain overnight the game started in bright sun shine with YCW kicking to the Cranbourne end.from the first bounce Eames tapped to Poole who handballed to Lew Roberts running past the centre and after one bounce kicked from outside the 50 to score a 15 sec goal, which would have to be the quickest of the year, certainly the quickest Ive seen in a long time..
Andy Keily blocks in front of Hackett, Lade and Eames
Whilst Poole and Roberts were on top of their game and winning the ball out of the centre with help from Eames, the next goal however was to be a long time coming, with the game developing in to a battle of the backlines. With Proud was on top of Hackett, Burke on Macca keeping the ball on a rebound and Ulmer well held by Van Raay, it was to be late in to the Q before Tellis was able to score our only other major for the first 25 min stanza. Despite having numerous easy shots at goal, the forwards were only able to post 5 points, the first sign of our poor kicking which was to eventually to loose us the game.
At the other end meanwhile, Keiley kept Lade scoreless, Rhys was having a gem of a game, killing Chara… and rebounding deep in to our forward line, whilst Wintle, Blake and Jie were as dependable as ever, keeping Karingal to 1.0.6 to our 2.5.17.
The second Q saw the game open up and YCW begin to take command with Tellis, Pooley and Maca getting on top of there opponents and Dougy and Rhys (now on Clements) dominant on their wings enabling the forwards in Lewis, Tellis, Hackett and Maca to kick goals whilst at the other end Karingal were able to kick 3 despite the hot defence of Keily, Byron and Knacker’s. At the big break YCW looked to be taking command going in with a handy lead 6.9.45 to 4.3.27 and all to play for..
.
Lewis Robert marking over Justin Farrelly, was our best player for the day and a source of inspirationwith over 30 possessions and 3 goals
The change in weather and ends at the staart of the 3rd Q however also saw a major change in the state of play as Karingal took over the running with Burke onball, Chara on the wing and their forward line working lilke a charm saw Clements kick a single, `Their` Eames kick 2 while the big Guy got his second goal on Keily. Swamped, only Maca was able to trouble the scorer for the Q, going to the Oranges with a slender lead 8.9.57 .to 7.10.52.
The last Q saw us squander our lead with inaccurate kicking and poor defence as Lade was able to kick his 3rd goal from an easy mark from a spot perfect kick from Burke to take them to the lead. Lewis replied with a a great goal from 50m after marking and followed this up with a miss from a goals square mark moments later. Another goal from Tellis from long range saw us inch back to the lead but Karingal continued to pepper the goals with Eames kicking another 2, Lade getting his 4th from a mark and kick from deep in the pocket and Adams chipping in for 1 to go 10 points up.
Patty Heijden missed from close up and Banfield returned the favour missing from the goal line. The Ulmer in a flash of brilliance marked from way out against Van Raay and sank the Sherrin to drag us to within 4 points. Shots and misses from Hackett, Lewis, Hiejdeen and Hutchinson followed as the clock drew down without bringing up the double calicos before Macca got one of his sneaky ones to get us within 4 points and looking good. Maca had a chance to finish it with a miss from close in, but a final goal from Burke ended the game… 13.12.90 to 11.14.80.
Macca kicking one of his 3 for the day..great day !!
My best for the day had to be Lewis Roberts who was in everything and our focal point of attack keeping us in the game, Dougy on the wing, Knackers up back, Macca on ball with 3 goals and Rhys brilliant in the first half. Lets all regroup..2 games lost… 1 point , 10 points lets not start last years bad habits again !!

Schneider’s Scintillating Seconds, seriously undermanned by our massive list of injuries, were forced to play our Coach again and had a hard time of it in the first half to stay with Karingal, being 13 points down at the long break. But we turned the tables in the second half drawing almost level at The Oranges and going down by a miserly 4 points at the siren. Best..Langys old Coach, Jies little brother and The Coaches sibling…
