Mornington Home 2010…….Dogs Euthanized Humanely..They Felt No Pain !!

Saturday 9 July Stonecats v The Dogs at the Stonecave……Weather… Sunny

Zannon gets the ball away regardless…now really back to his true form after a hard road back !!  Also Rockys Taping helps …..

Coach Barry looked in to his crystal ball for his team setup for Mornington, and decided that it may be  judicious to give those truly great workhorses, Benny Poole and The Great Ulmer a weeks R & R after the last two hard games against Seaford and Karingal…In their place, the wise one decided to go with Young Maca, who got dropped last week (with the late inclusion of Steve Roberts), and a new face for the senior supporters, in Rohan Bleeker, on loan from the Stingrays, having his first senior game.

Acting Captain Stevey Roberts won his first toss, and elected to kick to the Railway end with the aid of a gail force wind and under overcast skies. Barry’s Boys immediately took control and bombarded the Mornington goals with a fusilage of Sherrin. It took a little while for the forwards to adjust to the conditions, with the swirling wind and morass ground state giving problems, but with the ball never entering Morningtons 50, the boys finally clicked in, and with Lewis and Chappy kicking 2 each, and Young Maca steering 1 the boys finished the Q 5.8.38 to zilch .

Upended !!

With Eames in control of the ruck,,Stevey in everything on ball, Byron redeeming himself with 13 possession’s at half back and Benny Hackett playing like a Rover downback, and rebounding the ball continually from 14 collects, it looked like we were going to have a good day, even though we were about to face the major task of kicking in to what was now a raging gale ..

What followed however, was perhaps the best display of the textbook method of the way to play into the wind I have seen in many a year..Not giving Mornington a look in, even with the aid of the gale, the boys from the backline down, destroyed the Dogs by employing a fast run on game, chipping the ball low to position, taking the run on handball, creating the short loose man and surging the ball forward..

A treat to watch as we kicked 9.7. against the wind to Morningtons solitary major..Visually our best Q of the year except for the best..(which was about to follow!!).

Maca about to lay of for a goal to Benny Tellis

Lewis Roberts showed exquisite skills to kick 2 goals, as he tore Morningtons defence to shreds, as did Steve who also kicked two from on the run snaps. Singles were added to the score by Knacker’s Jie, Kyle and Benny Tellis. Zannon up back had a cracker of a Q stopping any of Morningtons forays, while Rohan Bleeker showed why hes a star of the future, picking up 15 touches for the Q…. which had us going in for the Snakes 14.15.99 to 1.2.8. (YES 8!!)

With the wind still gale force, the Dish Lickers were wishing they were back at the Kennel, as Bugs Boys pulled the Leash even tighter, and immediately started a barrage of Sherrin even worse than the last with Lewis getting one from long range, followed up almost immediately by a mark and goal from Maca who repeated the dose from another of his sneeky goals from the middle of a pack directly in front.

Bods had his best game of the year and was a great back up to Ash in the ruck.

Young Maca hit a long rolling goal in from long range, and Rhys toe pocked one in from the goal line. By this time the poor kids in the scoreboards were wishing they had spent more time on maths, as the crescendo of goals now tested their multiplication and addition ability’s, and loooong delays in score changing, were being experienced as the score changed by the minute.

Lewis snared a further 2, as did Benny T. Singles were added by Young Maca, Stevey and Kyle, totalling a score of  11 goals 9 for the Q our best this year. Lewis shone like a beacon up forward, with his 3 for the Q, whilst down back Byron was busy redeeming himself with 15 touches, helping the backline to keep the dogs to 2 points, for the Q,  which finished 25.24.174 to 1.4.10 9 (driving their Coach to distraction ??)

The last Q into the wind proved a distraction, and with the Dogs now firmly Euthanized..Humanely !!… we suddenly went off the boil, and allowed them out of the Kennel for the Q, and outscore us 24 to 20, and miss out on a 200 point total and a chance of becoming the team to have the biggest winning margin ever against Mornington..Not Good !! ,Scores for the Q, after the previous onslaughts…solitary singles from Lewis, Stevey and Bods with his first for the year… to go in to the Ice Bath 28.26.294 to 5.4.34

My best in a sea of good players …the Maestro of the forward line, Lewis Roberts with 8 goals (our highest since Marshall against Hastings in 2004), his namesake Steve , a great Captains Game with 33 touches and four goals ,looks like hes fully recovered ??.. I also liked Bods who played a great game as second Ruck, Zannon who had his best game up back since returning,  Jie ,in everything and old time favourite Knackers who showed what experience can do for your game.. But then, we didn’t have a bad player…except one ???…. I’m back to being excited !!

Schneider’s Scintillating Seconds had no trouble beating the bottom side Mornington by 70 point..methinks it should have been more though ?? Good to see the Coaches sibling back amongst the goals, like old times..its like riding a bike..Dale back in the best, and with 2 goals and Shane Blick back for a game after 6 preseason’s ??
