Saturday 24th July Stonecats v The Mounties at the Stonecave.. Weather Fine 28c
Dale Carey finally makes it to his 200th ..with a little help from his friend/s !!
The only downside of last Saturdays game against Bon Beach, was the dislocation to Ash`s little pinkie which put him out of Coach Barry’s team selection to take on ladder leader Mt Eliza. Bugs had a ready made replacement however, as Andy Keily had been into the soup and lemon juice, and had overcome his sniffle attack and was again able to take his place in the side.
Apart from this forced change, the side remained the same as that which demolished the Sharks. Winning the toss the boys kicked towards the Melbourne end in overcast conditions and witha slight wind.
Rhys Johnson takes one of his many marks for the match
Mt Eliza started without gun forward Masterton and the Mounties put Lockwood in the key position. Drive forward to the Stonecat end, was immediately given by wingers Rhys and Dougy and Zannon playing in the corridor but the Mounty defence was up to the task and with Lloyd Williams covering the HB line and turning defence in to attack, scoring proved very difficult. A further problem eventuated when Andy Kiely had to leave the field in the first 10 mins with a knee injury, creating major problems for the onballers.
Ulmer was thrown on to the ball to cover the gap, and immediately took control of the ruck and up forward. The first goal came at the 15 min mark with Tellis passing to Chappy, on the lead, and sinking it from directly in front, followed immediately by a missed chance from Rhys which shaved the post.. Up back Patty Heijden (11possessions) and Byron were providing a stumble block to any forays by Mt Eliza and kept them scoreless for the Q
Play went back and forth without a further score for the Q, with neither side taking control, closing 1.4.10 to 0.2.2.at the short break.
Lewis Roberts sinking a goal in the 2nd Q
The second Q started with Lewis missing a goal from a mark in the pocket, followed immediately at the 3 min mark by a goal from a mark directly in front but further out. At the other end Strickland had one of his few possessions after breaking away from Patty, and goaling from the pocket. This was to be their only score for the Q as Steve Roberts ( 6 touches) and Poole hit their straps and our forward line started to apply the pressure with Lewis, 6 possessions, in everything.
Up back Nankervis with 9 possessions was impassable in defence . Lewis got his 2nd for the Q from a pass by Macca from an angle, 30 m out, and on the rebound from the centre bounce, Kyle got the benefit of a free kick in the pocket, to goal from the boundary line…..Just 3 min, on Steve received similar favourable treatment from the Umpire, and sank the 4th for the Q from strait in front.
The Q finished with a further free kick being awarded to Kyle in the Goalsquare who again made no mistake with the gift, and sent the Mounties back to the rooms 6.10.46 to 2.2.14… and the wheels falling off the Mounty Machine !!
Steve Roberts puts the ball goalwards ..3rd Q !!
The 1st goal of the 3rd Q came in the 2 min, with Chappy taking a great mark in the goal square, making no mistake from the goal line, and then marking again and missing from strait in front to start a chain of points with Poole missing from a free kick awarded against Tompkins, and Lewis missing a sitter from 30 m at a slight angle.
Down back Patty Heijden continued to rule the roost and Young Maca paid for his salary by getting 9 touches for the Q. At the 20 min mark the game was rapped up when Tellis goaled from a snap in front, and Steve took advantage of a Knackers pass to goal from 50 m.. End of story with the Orange break score being 9.13.67 to 2.4.16
Bodleywas awarded the 3MMM award for best on ground…I agree with that !!
The start of the last Q proved to be the death knell for the Mounties, as Dougy and Steve pounded our forward line, and Kyle took full advantage, handballing to Maca for a sneaky goal from the goal square. This was then followed immediately by a great goal square mark and goal from Kyle himself.
Steve shoots the ball goal wards
Kyle followed this up with another mark, running backwards against the flight, and goaled for his second while Patty took a break from the backline to mark and goal from the square and finish the days proceedings, running away for a 62 point win,….. 13.15.93 to 4.7.31 Great to see Paul Wintle keep `gun forward` Lockwood to one goal. !!
.
Rhys Johnson, won on his wing for the 2nd week in a row !!
My best for the day in a side which had no stragglers, was for the second week in a row, David Bodley with 14 possessions, his work in the ruck and around the ground..brilliant, Rhys for his control of the wing, Nackers for his 18 possessions up back and Kyle for his magic last Q and 4 goals..I’m impressed !!.. But again those missed shots, 15, in the scoreline…better sides will not be so gentle…as I said last week !!

Schneider’s Scintillating Seconds, compose themselves, to Schneider’s oratory, prior to taking the field against the unbeaten Mounties Seconds
The Stonecat Magoo’s had the task ahead of them in their battle against Mt Eliza on Saturday. Facing a 13 game unbeaten run by The Mounties and having a side depleted by injuries, the boys showed great courage and commitment to take up the running and go head to head with the juggernaut. The boys out scored them in the 2nd to lead by 10 points and kept the lead to win by the slenderest of margins winning 6.2.38 to 5.6.36 …again proving the value of strait kicking. Good to see the Captain continue his good run, Ricky with his 2nd B on G for the year and the Grover still on the back burner.. In all, a great win to celebrate Dale Carey’s 200th game!!
