Preliminary Final v Eady/Asp

13th September Preliminary Final Vs Eady/Asp. Weather Stormy

2009 QF v Eady 049Benny Tellis marks in front

As seems to be always the case with our team in an important final, there were fitness doubts with 3 players right up to Sunday morning and unfortunately one, in Benny Poole did not pass a fitness test on Saturday and was left out..a major blow to our team balance.. with Pat Heijden  coming in to the side to take his place.

In a poor standard game YCW lead by 1 goal at the short break, going in to a strong wind, and at half time had extended it to 7 points with the wind, only being kept in the match by great defensive work by Keily,Ducky and BJ and some atrocious kicking by Eady/Asp who scored 1 goal 7 for the Q. Our scorers for the half were Ducky, Ando, Lester and Carroll. The situation was not helped by Bundy re injuring his ankle in the first minutes of the game,  and virtually taking no further part in the action.

BJ in hot  pursuit !!

The second Q saw us start with a bit more method in our play, and majors to Maca, Bundy, Steve Roberts and 2 great goals to the pocket dynamo in Lauchlan Wallace saw us taking control of the game and beginning to look like winners with an Orange Break score of 9.10.64 to 6.15.51.

A very angry Benny Tellis

The final Q started with Keily in the ruck, and his aggressive play enabled Steve Roberts, Lester and Stewart to generate some drive to the forwards. Heijden immediately took advantage of a defensive error and toe poked one thu in the first minutes.

This was followed by a mark and goal by Hacket followed by great goals of opportunity by Roberts and Lauchlan Wallace, all without reply by Eady/Asp, with the score line at the 20 mark being 13.12.90 to 6.20.56 a 34 pt lead.

This however was to be our last score, as with Keily taken off and Ulms sent to the back line, the side lost its run, and Eady took full advantage to slot thru 6 goals for the Q without further reply.

A game we had won, lost in the blink of the eye, and a return of our inability to put sides away when we are winning, and our fatal flaw of succumbing to pressure….a season wasted !!

2009 QF v Eady 130Ducky outmarks Shane Downie

My best were Ducky Waddell, who has to be among the best footballers in this League, another 30 stats as a backman ??.

Kiely who played an absolute blinder at full back and made mince meat of gun forward Lewis Roberts before they sent him elsewhere, Steve Roberts who has finally become a Rover of senior stature getting 32 possessions and 3 goals.

Leigh Stewart who showed his great experience, courage and in and under ball getting ability with 10 kicks and 14 handballs, the rising stars in Wintle and Locky Wallace who is certainly destined for other places and our veteran ball magnets in BT and Tony Lester who always guarantee you 110% and a plethora of possessions.

The final score of 13.12.90 to 12 22 94 and the 4 point margin should make us all do some personal soul searching over the coming long hot summer !!

Notwithstanding all that, its been great fun and a pleasure to work with you all in season 2009..Have a happy and safe break before we start this all over again in November!!
