Seaford at Home 2010

26th June Stonecats v Tigers at the Stonecave.. Weather Changeable ..Sunny to Cloudy in Last 2 mins

The day started off brightly with the first Club Logo to be featured on a MPNFL Ground floating on the water !!..

Saturdays game presented some headaches for Coach Barry with Dylan Hoare out suffering an injury, Captain Bundy Barry starting his 3 week sabbatical, following his visit to the tribunal, and then the late withdrawal of Byron Barry suffering a bad case of harness racing.. Basically, one row of our all conquering backline gone.. pphtt !!  Not a handy outcome when facing our longtime nemesis Seaford.

Delving in to his deep bag of tricks, Bugs decided to go with Young Maca and bring back Andy Keily and Blake`The Snake` McCormack as more than useful replacements to cover the gaps in the backline. With Wintle to fullback , Grover retaining his spot on the HBF and Blake and Andy in the pockets it was a new look defensive unit ..

Kicking to the hill end it looked like Bugs machinations were working as the  backline presented an impassible force field, with Seaford being kept goallessfor the Q.   In terrible ground conditions that negated long kicking and high marking the day was perfect for the burrowing smalls and this showed with Benny T and Benny P  taking over the centre and providing a sure line of attack to Ulma, Macca and Lewis who between them put on 3 goals.

But for some erratic kicking which brought in 5 points, sustained accuracy could have had the game almost over at the first break..!!    Benny T was on fire in the first Q with 12 possessions and one major and Pooley equally profilic with 8 whilst Hutch ( 1 goal ) and Maca were worrying the Tiger backs with his solid aggressive play sorting out the boys from the men.  The Q ended with YCW in complete control and edging away 3.5.23 to 0.3.3.

The 2ndQ saw more of the same with The Grover on top of Seaford Legend Pat Cadd, Zannon Daff  just too experienced and clever for Paul Harris and Pauly Wintle not putting a foot wrong in his game and keeping Tom Shaw goalless the Tigers were again well held just getting two for the Q.

The continued drive of Pooley and Eames from the center and a ball getting frenzy from Knacker’s ( 10 Possessions) on ball gave the Cats the majority of field time possession and goals to Zannon,Tellis and Bods to take us in to the long break with a handy lead 6.9.45 to 2.9.21. But with some worries with our inaccurate kicking and lost chances to put the game away.  And the expected difficulties for the talls to make an impression aroundthe ground and in front of goal…

The Conditions at the ground were lesss than pleasant…Stott and friends kept the traffic moving !!

The third Q started off with a reinvigorated Seaford showing much more determination and panache and with Steve Jones beginning to cut off  Ben Tellis`s supply, Pooley starting to find the ball much harder to get as Clarke got more of the centre clearances, and with unknown Dylan Crump playing a blinder and cutting us to shreds and getting the ball out of the packs and up forward.

Seaford began to get more ball and rattled 3 strait for the Q, to a single goal kicked by Jie, on one of the infrequent forays in to our forward 50. ..Zannon, Keily and Wintle continued to fly the flag up back, but a lot of the forward talls and the onball smalls had gone missing .The Q finished 7.11.52.to 5.9.39 a still hand lead of 13 points and all to play for.

Tellis stops Stephen Jones in the 3rd Q as he began to take on a bigger influence in the game

After the Orange break Seaford could smell blood, and they came out looking like a side totally committed to win and with YCW`s drop in intensity in the 3rd opening the door they played all over us in the initial stages sweeping aside our defence and scoring 2 goals in the first 10 mins came within a point of the lead. YCW then redeployed andhad most of the play but were unable to put the many chances  they had away for goals. Four points totted up with bad misses from the Great Ulmer, Lewis and Patty.

Knackers was in everything up forward together with Kyle and Lewis ,whilst Zannon and Hackett did their best down back. Against the flow of play a high kick to Dean Kemble was spoiled by Benny Hackett but the spill went to Crump who goaled brilliantly despite the attentions of Jie.

An immediate break out of the centre saw Pat Cadd get one of his few possessions and handball to  Luke Smith who goaled from 5 m out taking  Seaford  to 9 goals 10, 7 points in front..with 2 mins to play and the Seaford crowd pleading for the siren !!.

With 1 min to play Ulmer got a mark 30m out in front but couldn’t convert and from the kick out, Eames put it forward again to Kyle who dobbed it and put us 1 point down ….but then time ran out, the siren blew and we went down by 1 point 8.15 ( yes15 ).63 to 9.10.64.

Consistent on the wing and defence Rhys beats LukeSmith to the ball..

Despite the loss I was rather pleased by the display we put on, after all the troubles over the last week, and from our first half performance we could have expected to win despite all our injuries …but that’s all should haves…..we didn’t and lost by 1 point..  Note however the last Q scoreline..Us 1.4.10 them 4.1.25 tells the whole story from 5 shots each ..

My best Grover, who was hard at it from go to woh and kept Brian Cadd to 1 goal and a sprinkle of possessions, Nakers who had a surfette of possessions and did the hard stuff when needed, Zannon who continues his remarkable return to football by thrashing Harris and Chadwick, and Wintle who for mine beat Shaw, keeping him to 2 goals..Special mention to Rhys who fought it out all day and had the better of his opponents with most tackles for the match, and they hurt !!.

Schneiders  Scintillating Seconds looked more like a team from the 90`s with the Coach returning for a hit out with his brother Andy, Brems, and Blaber, with Gooch, Doggy waiting in the wings, Artico on standbye and Hardy ready for recall.. With this bunch of has beens, now the new face of YCW Football, one could be expected to think that time had run out for any influence on this years finals from the Reserve Juggernaut.. But not so !!!

The boys acquitted themselves admirably with the new look and took it right up to 2nd placed Seaford.. Feeling their way in the first half the backline kept Seaford to a minimum allowing only 3 goals whilst we lulled them in to a false sense of security by purposely not scoring.. The second half however saw the boys now on song and drew within 1 goal by Orange time. The last Q went neck and neck right to the last with the lead changing a number of times but Seaford had the luck and went in 4.5.29 to 5.9.39..

Special mention to the Captain Trent,  amazingly among the best, who should never have played with the debilitating foot injury he had, causing great pain..Gutsy or Mad  ???  I’m still deliberating ??  Herby continues on his winning ways…ever closer to that B&F..

Zannon Daff Clearing..his best game for the year.

Reidys Raiders were outclassed by the powerful Seaford Unit and didn’t score a goal for the game. Its a long time since that happened (off to the record books, certainly not since Ive been involved 1994) and not a good look !!  Good to see some strong defence kept them to a modicum of goals till the break away in the last. Hang in there it will come .
