Cam McNab kept Lynch quiet in a solid display !!

Schneider’s Scintillating Seconds entered the Finals with a seriously good season finishing third with 13wins for the Season. Unfortunately two of those losses were against Seafordwho had beaten us 10.17.73 to 10.10.70 in round 1andthen repeated the dose in round10 with a 5.9.39 to 4.5.29 victory.   Small losses with some lucky breaks falling Seaford’s way however,  gave the boys some reason for optimism as we entered the Qualifying Final against Seaford ..yet again.. in this years finals.

With our best side available, we went in to the game full of confidence that Schneiders machinations and planning would get us to the post ..!!  At the ungodly time of 9.30am, the boys therefore took the field, on a beautiful spring morning in perfect conditions and drew the straw to kick to the beach end……..

Lafakeeping tabs on Smith, who was kept to a single goal !!

The first Q started with some interesting match ups with Nestor going on to Booker, Harlin to Blaber and Haverfield on to young Maca while up back Trentfound himself on Quanchi, Jessie on Chadwick, Lafaon Smith while Exner tried his wares on Raftopolous. On ball, Strico matched up with Azzopardi, Steve Meagher  in the ruck against big Scott..

The backs on both  sides had control of the game in the first 17min stanza with  nary a goal being scored with  some indifferent kicking on both sides sending us to the short break 2 points up 0.6.6 to 0.4.4.   The Lafa to Exner to Grover trio, was particularly effective in driving the ball in to attack from the backline, while Cam McNab was also effective in keeping his man goalless.

Exner, my best on the day, didn’t put a foot wrong in possibly his best game of the year !!

The 2nd  Q saw much of the same, with play rolling back and forth  before, at the 3 min mark Smith  marked over Lafa and proceeded to goal from a slight angle from 20m out. It was to be 12 min in to the Q before we got our first major, when Booker was held by Falzon (ex YCW) and was awarded a free near the point post, which he had no trouble converting.

With the Q nearly 20 min old, Seaford had a lucky break when from a spill, the ball was toe pocked thru from the goal line to take the lead 2.6.18 to 1.9.15.  It was all beginning to happen at the arse end of the Q, as at the 24th min Blaber received a beautiful pass from Ricky, and ran on to snap a goal, to go to the long break ahead…just..2.10.22 to 1.9.15

Hegar’s proving its not the size in the dog that counts..its the size of the fight in the dog !!

Schneiders half time soliloquy seemed to have worked wonders, as from the first bounce the ball was driven goalwards, where Steve Meagher was able to kick an opportunistic goal from the line. Things were going better as 10 min in, Hegarty snapped up the ball dead in front, to plant it thru from the goalline to take the lead to 4.13.37 to 2.10.22 . Then 2 min on, Artico marked at CHF and drove the ball deep to to the goals where Steve Meagher marked in the pocket and hooked a goal from the boundary line…excellent play !!.      .5.13 43 to 2.10.22.

Our inaccurate kicking was going to come back and bite us however, as that was to be the last goal for the Q, with 6 misses adding 6 points to the 3rd Q total.

Just as the Q was  about to finish, Chadwick burst away from Jesse and Exner on the lead, and marked in front. The conversion brought them back in to the game, going to the Lemons  6.16. 52 to 3.10.28…4 goals up !!!…and opportunities wasted..but still 4 goals up and all…it seemed..to play for.

Artico marks in front of Tom Scott !!

The last Q started with Seaford going strait in to attack, and it was only to be 3 min in, before the Umpire handed a free kick to Nestor from some unknown infringement by Trent, which he converted from the goal square 6.16.54 to 4.11.46.   From the resultant centre bounce the ball was driven to Seaford goals were the Umpire again penalized Trent, this time for an equally ludicrous decision on a supposed infringement on Quanchi..score 6.16.52 to 5.11.46 with the lead fading.

Not done yet however, YCW answered immediately, when Ricky pulled the ball out of a pack and broke away to give a pin point pass to Booker, who goaled from the resultant set shot from 20 out.. 7.16.58 to 5.11.46. It looked like we were beginning to get on top again, when it Grover marked on the wing, broke away and sent a boomer from the 50 m line strait thu the goals, putting us 3 goals up again at the 20 min mark, 8.16.64 to 6.11.47..well in to time on !!

The Umpire came to Seaford’s rescue once again however, when Walker kicked to the pocket, where Lafa and Kelly competed for the mark against Starkey and were once again on the receiving end of another dubious decision, when Starkey was handed a goal on a plate  to bring them to within 10 points…8.16.64 to 7.12.54……. Almost immediately, Seaford got away again from a very tired stonecat defence, to drop in another goal…… 8.16.64 to 8.12.60….4 points adrift ….. things where going from bad to worse !!

Seaford were continuing to win from the centre, and the backs were under constant pressure and unable to clear their half.  With 9 min of overtime played, it looked like we would hang on for the win, but the inevitable Umpires decision, that plauged our last Q,  reared  its head again, when Lafa was pinged for an over the shoulder infringement. The resultant goal followed by the siren, saw the game peter out with a 9.15.69 to 8.16.64 defeat..

Grover flies !!

We had many good players, not with standing the defeat, with my best, Exner, who won well over Raftopolous and was a constant source of attack from the HBL, Grover a great job on the Wing, Trent who kept Quanchi to 1 goal, McNab solid all game,  Mitch who did a number on Smith and Meagher, imposing in the ruck and around the ground…Next week Pines ??
